Thank you, Andrew. This is the most comprehensive and comprehensible presentation of this seemingly daunting task I have seen. I anxiously await the followup rebuild video.

So Allen, how do you get the top gear to slip in, played and played, rotated it every which way, and can’t get it in. Is there a trick?

I got as far as pushing out the pinion axle a 3/4" but it wont pull out any more. You used a screw driver through the roll pin hole, I may have to concoct a slide hammer attachment for that!

I think it would be wise to buy a set of proper drifts

maybe - seems to work fine though. Was never sure what a 'set of drifts' really was though, which is probably why I don't have any. I go to toolstation.com and put 'drift' in the search box and come up with just one hit that looks totally wrong for what I need. Do you have any good pointers?

Hi Ronnie - do you mean taking out the crown wheel and pinion etc? If so, no - I didn't do that because I thought it would be OK, and (I was told) that most clonk can be fixed by replacing the thrust washers etc. Here's a club friend of mine who has done a good write-up on this: www.the289register.com/stuart/De%20clunking%20your%20MGB%20rear%20axle.pdf

Ok, but if you will get rid of the klonk, you have to rebuild it komplitely.
