@@shaku4713 No the controls mention ZSD. It just has a different input than regular ED. You need to hold the top face and right face button when you're doing the thrust to do ZSD. In the demo it looks like they start the ED and immediately start tapping the top face button.

I loved invincible gambit in rise for leaning into swaxe's nonexistent defenses and just saying "hey, take damage on purpose". Seeing that same idea baked into the counter is great to see. Time to run max resentment and counter everything.

@@MahnsterHunter well honestly I wouldn't go that far to just calling it "inconvenient", I think they nailed a good balance with Axe mode utility starting with IB and going into Rise. Aside from both modes having strengths and weaknesses, the weapon is at its best and most fun when you have to utilize both modes and morphing, so I'm hoping the switch gauge management will be an important "weakness" of Sword mode to play around while still showcasing Axe mode's advantages and utility

There’s a clips in the japanese ign gameplay where the “offset” counter in axe mode staggers the monster out of it’s attack animation without the hunter taking any damage due to his positioning. It seems like the sword mode counter requires the hunter to be hit to do anything, but the axe mode “counter” doesn’t require a hit trade, which is a cool distinction between the two

Glad to see that you’re able to choose between performing ED or ZSD as opposed to being locked into the latter in amped mode, it’s not always something I want to commit to. Otherwise, everything looks great! I was worried they were largely going to forsake Rise’s changes, but the weapon looks fast and fluid while also seemingly not allowing you to have almost 100% sword & amped mode uptime.

W change, especially since there's follow ups to ED now too, which will make it a viable option for when the monster is down. Though since we didn't get much ZSD footage yet, I have to wonder if we have knockback resistance like in Rise. It seems like the only thing they're not adding is the morph spam gameplay. Kinda like they're pushing us to EARN the sword mode in a way?

@@MahnsterHunter Indeed, here’s hoping Rise’s ZSD hyper armor gets carried over. I don’t want to have to use mantles to make the move actually usable again. I’m also hoping for less obnoxious out of bounds areas that monsters can wander into and cut your ZSD off (looking at you, Elder’s Recess area 11). I’m glad that morph spam appears to be gone too. While Rise’s Switch Axe is one of my favorite versions of the weapon, repeating the same morphing morphing loop over and over again for insane damage and damn near infinite sword/amp made the weapon feel super streamlined. Axe mode should feel necessary while not feeling like a punishment for running out of juice, or in Rise’s case, literally just a footnote. They shoulda just called it “Switch” in that game.

@@MahnsterHunter My guess is the counter will be fairly easy to time, but as it has a follow up attack, if the monster also have a follow up attack, then it won't be good to use it. The other weapons' counters are knocking down the monster, but not Switch Axe...

I'm excited for this incarnation of the weapon, having to attack with the axe mode to refill the sword gauge gives a good function to the axe. Honestly I would like that the power axe buff could make the axe mode attacks nearly as strong as sword mode attack without the phial buff, but maybe that would be too OP. I'm a bit sad that the amp gauge doesn't apply to the axe mode anymore :(

Full release slash also had an extended blade of pure energy at the tip in the Switchaxe weapon showcase and feels more powerful too, so I’m guessing other weapons will allow for that overcharged state like how gun lances have different shell types. Was really hyped to see it in action but sad to realize we won’t get to see its full coolness in these demos 😢

@@MahnsterHunter Yeah the manual that's been shown had a move called compressed slash which seems like its kind of the elemental discharge to full release slash's ZSD (similar input but doesn't require amped state) And interesting note though if that is actually compressed slash the manual only mentioned being able to combo full release slash out of the elemental discharge but that is pretty clearly being comboed together to skip the long windup. That would mean the manual's combos aren't necessarily extensive or compressed slash and full release slash and being considered somewhat equivalent for combo purposes. And that raises the question of will that also be true for elemental discharge and ZSD. I don't wanna get my hopes up too much especially when we don't even have footage of a normal ZSD yet but I'm wondering if you might be able to link ZSD into full release slash using the grappling hook as a replacement for Rise's soaring wyvern blade ZSD followup

full release slash is done while in amped mode. while not amped, the attack instead is called compressed slash. This is likely why there are animation differences

A lot of the monsters we've seen so far move quite slow and their biggest hits have been insanely telegraphed. This could allow for us to simply walk out of a lot of threats or just use the counter rising slash to protect yourself. Thats not a guarantee though, some monsters may have follow ups to intentionally throe you off like they did in Rise

@@MahnsterHunter Apart fom Rey Dau they're all beginner monsters, so it's normal for them to have telegraphed and slower moves. They insanely buffed mobility and positioning options for the hunter in this one, designing a majority of slow and predictable monsters wouldn't make much sense. And i don't think they're using beginner gear in the builds they've shown. I remember in worlds when people fought Anjanath, which is actually rather slow and predictable, yet carted soo many people because when he hit he hit hard af. When this bear looking mf hits you it hurts but not as much by a long shot. Harder and faster monsters surely come up as soon as you rise up in ranks, and that's where people will be thankfull for the counter and offset moves.

Just to comment on the 4:42 slash, this probably is the compressed slash which can be used outside of amped mode and uses the same input except instead of holding R2 you just tap it. It´s obv still speculation but according to the move sheet we got at gamescom it seems to be pointing towards it

I am liking the changes I’m seeing so far. It really looks like they made a large effort to make both the sword and axe modes powerful and viable in their own way. I like how the counters/parries seem more balanced than in rise/sunbreak. It really plays into how I imagine the switch axe being a “reckless” weapon with forgoing defense for offense with the reduced damage taken. I’m hoping rapid morph skill returns and what changes it may have on the combos.

I think its a good approach to give weapons more viable options with costs attached to them; makes the game grounded, combat weighty and discourages mindless button mashing. Although it seems like the longsword isn't subject to the same rules seeing how they buffed it even more and removed almost all the commitment.

Too bad that LS's counters still make it fully invincible. It makes no sense that Switch Axe has to suffer from a worse counter while other weapon's counters don't have that kind of drawback at all. LS already has decent movement options and doesn't have to worry about fat rolls and poor dodge distance like SA, either. In the clip posted, the player lost about 1/7th of their health off a successful counter, imagine how worse that's gonna be coming from an elder dragon or something. Doesn't help that LS lost basically nothing while SA's amp doesn't carry over to axe anymore and doesn't recover sword gauge by switching. As much as I love SA, I had to switch to LS in base World since there was nothing the weapon did that LS couldn't, and I'm really afraid they're repeating the same mistake in Wilds.

One note about the Full Release Slash. One video I watched (I think it was on Arrek's gaming? But I've watched a lot of people so I could be wrong) said the difference between the full Full Release Slash, and the partial one, is the sword being amped vs not being amped, rather than having enough sword gauge. I have a feeling them demonstrated as well?

Switch Axe always had trouble balancing its two modes. I know Axe Mode is supposed to deal less damage in trade of its range and higher mobility, and it was ok at it for a while. XX/GU gave a lot of steam to Sword Mode, and World/Iceborne practically killed Axe with how much disparity it had between both modes' damage numbers. Rise/Sunbreak giving the Axe access to Amped state was an amazing change, and that coupled with the new morph attacks, switch skills and whatnot, almost perfected the weapon. I'm super happy to see the return of the regular Elemental Discharge even at Amped state, plus a lot of Rise/Sunbreak Switch Skills seems to be part of your moveset now, with you accessing them through different button combinations. I was confident we were never gonna see a better version of SA after Rise when all the marketing team seemed to be pushing that Wilds' combat looks more like World's, but all I can see here is a more grounded, but even better version of Rise's SA. And I'm all so excited for it. I hope Axe still have access to Amped State, or at least that Power Axe and the new moves gives it enough juice to compete with Amped State. And I think, tho it's hard to tell without some more in-depth testing and analysis, that Triangle while standing on Axe is Overhead Slash like in every game except for World. It's a small thing, since it's not hard to access any Axe move, but Overhead first I'd say is much preferable, as it packs a pretty good punch compared to the other basic moves, and it's one of the only moves that hit vertically down so it's very useful to hit heads and wings. That side slash always felt more like a transitional move, something you only do in virtue of it being part of a combo or just your draw attack.

The answer to your last question will probably revolve around how much focus affects the SA in this game. It might be a worthwhile skill this time around. The playstyle I want to play is axe-mode and then that cool full release slash whenever I get an opening. Looks like it has potential for status and element builds. The thing that I DON'T LIKE is that we don't get amped axe anymore. That would have been great if they wanted us to actually land attacks in axe mode. 2 steps forward and 1 step back

so, looking at this again with the control guide, my fears coming out of rise are pretty much alleviated as they're still keeping the combo centric gameplay from rise and doubling down on it with full release slash having a shorter startup after an elemental discharge and heavensward flurry having a much shorter startup after the sword counter. the only thing i'm slightly worried about is the counter not negating damage potentially making the weapon weaker in late game than all the other weapons, but if they make it like the sunbreak dereliction health drain where it can bring you to 1 health but not actually kill you then it's perfect.

There's more than likely a way to make the counter less dangerous and more viable late game through skills. Probably through skills like stun res, divine blessing, resentment etc to make sure that eating attacks isn't a death sentence. If that demo comes out, I'm definitely going to parry a weak attack from any monster and then try to parry the Rey Dau death blast...for science

Yeah, Wide Sweep is still in the game. They just didn't show it. When translating the button guide combo paths, it was there during wild swing. I don't know if it works like it does in world where it morphs or like it does traditionally where you have to manually morph yet.

No ZSD is surprising. Also, the sword counter is very underwhelming in term of damage and meter generation, maybe it is easy to pull of and is only intended to be a defensive move? But it's still a very bad counter compares to all other weapons... On the other hand I like the fact that we still take damage on both counters, it gives of a berzerker vibe that is very positive for the weapon personnality. At least I personaly dig it.

I was hoping for at least one, but I'm thinking now that maybe they didn't realize you had to hold Triangle + Circle instead or didn't look at the hunter's notes. As for the counter, maybe the guy didn't hit good spots on the doshaguma, but the amount of amped state it generates is kinda piddly too. At least it's a risk/reward structure where if you miss you lose a lot of switch gauge but if you land you get a decent refund.

@@MahnsterHunter It's true that ZSD is in the move compendium. Just read another commentary stating that you have to hold the inputs instead of you doing the same as an element discharge and automaticaly jump on the baddie like in rise/world. So yeah, maybe the "beta testers" didn't analyse the compendium and tried it the old way and failed. According to the compendium the sword counter can be followed by a heavenward flurry, it doesn't sound very enticing but maybe the move has been buffed since world...?

Hard to tell if it has been buffed with how low the numbers were. Harder to tell if its a good source to increase amped gauge too. World was easier to fill power phial, but Rise it was super difficult. I wonder if its like that here?

The weapon chart shows that ZSD is now a hold command, so (Hold) Triangle + Cirlce, but I haven't found footage of it yet unfortunately.

It could be just me but new moves and combos are good but it is quite underwhelming for me compared to other weapons. ( at least in this demo, I know it can be better at release) filling up the gauge looking like it can be hard in some scenarios. on the other hand Long sword focus strike attack fills up an entire gauge for them, lol

I am sad they got rid of best part of the counter from rise wich was the instant full sword meter not just that both of the counters here feel underwhelming as well as I am not a fan of you still taking damage even if you get the counter

It is certainly weird considering we already have offset attacks that eat health on perfect counter. You'd think there'd be more to that counter but even the amp gauge gain is piddly when you land both follow up attacks. Hopefully they make some adjustments before launch.

Might have to spam heavenward flurry or Element Discharge? Seems like they're the best despite how little the gain is. UNLESS the amped state in Wilds works like it did in Rise because Power Phial had the highest threshold to enter amped state while dragon phial had the lowest.

Morph Rising Double Slash is actually a part of the sword combo in World too. Comes after a Triangle/Left Click sword attack. Though it had a slow build up part. I'm glad it's faster now

That's actually separate. There's Sword: Right Rising Slash and Sword: Left Rising Slash that happens if you press Triangle once or twice after Sword: Overhead Slash, but Morph Rising Double Slash was introduced in Rise and happens when you use Axe: Overhead Slash, Axe: Jumping Slash, Axe: Heavy Slam, and Forward Overhead Slash and then press R2.

@@MahnsterHunter i saw sliding attacks in Rurikahn's game play. So, those are back, but I see no sign of wall run attacks with bows 🏹, dual blade ⚔️, sword and shield 🗡️ 🛡️, hammer 🔨, great sword, etc.

Looks promising. I love Sunbreak, but SWAX was one of the few weapon I didn't like because of how brain dead they made it. Monster attacks > counter, opening is long enough > morph loop, opening is short > spam morph attacks. No phial or amp state management required thanks to counter and switcher jewel, and rapid-morph skill turned morph loop into a dps kind even back in Rise, making other moves irrelevant.

Precisely how it was played beat for beat. I'm glad that axe has more agency, but the more I see the more I wonder if we'll actually be using it or just skimming through it to get to sword.

@@MahnsterHunter It's going to be like basegame world, get amp, prod the monster with axe mode until there is an opening -> spam sword attacks into zsd finisher
