I thought the same thing. He’s almost quoting Trane’s solo verbatim. The question I wonder is why? Brecker could play anything he wanted. It’s not like this was too hard for him. Is it an homage to Trane? Or is it that even the best improvisers, when faced with these chords at that tempo instinctively “go home” to what they have transcribed and practiced for years? Wonder what he would say ...

tonally, brecker rocked this track, but rhythmically, it's kind of bland with the extended trains (tranes?) of eight notes and that's why giant steps is such a difficult piece to solo on

Coltrane had extended stretches of eighth notes in his solo as well. It's kind of a Giant Steps "thing." And I think it sounds good that way.

I know what you mean but I think Coltrane practiced it for a long time and then Tommy probably only saw it for the first time at the recording session.Its a total beast of a chord sequence even now so imagine how it looked back in the day.One of the out takes has no piano solo at all on it.

I guess the appeal is that it's technically difficult to play a rapid succession of notes at this tempo. People who like this stuff appreciate the virtuoso command of the instrument, but aesthetically it is not pleasant or even exciting to listen to. This kind of playing is why so many people dislike jazz.
@Hijodenels

You might enjoy Bob Mintzer's solo more (it and piano solo were edited out of this video). Mintzer also did a slower (very nice) version of GS on the album with just him and rhythm section.
