May 30th, 1998. Undefeated 25 year old "Big" Michael Grant made the 3rd defense of his IBC Heavyweight Title against 30 year old Obed Sullivan aka “The Fighting Marine” in the Convention Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Grant had 2 apparent advantages going into the fight; he was 4” taller and 7” longer.
Prefight records; Grant 27(19)-0, Sullivan 29(20)-2-1.
In Jun 1997, Grant lifted the IBC Heavyweight Title via RTD10 over former IBF Cruiserweight Champion Al Cole and made 2 successful defenses in November 1997 and January 1998.
For his 3rd defense, he was set to take on the hard hitting former IBF Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion.
It was a good fight with lots of back and forth action at close and long range that ultimately went in favor of Grant who remained the IBC Heavyweight Champion and retained his unbeaten record via his 20th knockout victory.
In round 1, Sullivan attempted to cut off the ring using his jab as a rangefinder while Grant utilized his own jab to keep him at bay. Both had their moments as Grant connected with more left jabs and right hands to the head while Sullivan landed the better shots downstairs. Grant was cut above his left eye due to an accidental headbutt.
In rounds 2 & 3, Grant rocked Sullivan with hard right hands just before the bell sounded.
In rounds 4, 5 & 6, both had successes at near equal measure as Grant frequently found his mark upstairs with right hands while Sullivan was more effective with body punches.
In rounds 7 & 8, both resumed trading in the inside and outside but it was Grant who had the upper hand due his bigger punching power as he slowed Sullivan down with fusillades of shots upstairs and downstairs.
In round 9, Sullivan was floored courtesy of a 3-punch salvo set up with a couple of jabs. He managed to beat the count but after 2 follow-up volleys of unanswered blows, referee Tony Orlando stepped in to halt the assault.
With the win, Michael Grant passed the toughest test of his career at that point and improved his unblemished record to 28(20)-0 to move another step closer to a world title shot.
Despite the loss, The Fighting Marine certainly put up a commendable effort against the rising young giant in comparison with his previous bout against Hasim Rahman which he lost via MD12 after a lackadaisical performance.
At the time of the stoppage, Grant was ahead 77-75 & 78-74 (2x) in the scorecards.
