The original version of “Jam” was leaked by American producer Eulonzo on April 1st, 2022. It was unknown this version existed.
Although fans are familiar with the original version from the “Dangerous” album in 1991, it has been revealed that “Jam” was originally written and recorded as far back as 1983-1984 during the Victory sessions at Sunset Sound in Los Angelos.
The song was in collaboration with Morris Day & The Time, as the song is produced by them, specifically Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Morris can be heard in the 12” extended version. It’s alleged that they all met after The Time recently had a falling out at one point with Prince. A few days after the James Brown concert in 1983, Michael, along with his brothers The Jacksons, met The Time, shortly after the falling out out they had with Prince. Michael had already written the song, just hadn’t recorded it yet.
They all hit it off, and they quickly recorded the track at Sunset Sound, on a day that Prince wasn’t there. Although Michael didn’t approve of Morris’s social activities, such as drugs & alcohol at the time, he admired Jimmy & Terry’s work, as he had heard them perform with The Time when they opened for Prince during the 1999 Tour in 1983. The song is produced by Joe Kehr, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, and co-produced by The Jacksons (it is unknown what their contributions were). Heavy D, an unknown rapper at the time, provided the rap verse.
While the song runs over 5 minutes, the full-length version is over 8 minutes long. This is due to Joe Kehr bringing in rapper R.E.D. to provide an extra rap for the 12” extended version before the synth breakdown and Morris coming in with extra vocals. Due to time constraints, the song was edited down to potentially fit on a vinyl if they ever decided to put it on an album. Plus, it is believed that Michael wasn’t too happy with the extra breakdown, as he felt it sounded very similar to what they were likely doing with Prince, which is what caused a major shift between the two bands during production of the song.
While they all ended up liking this version and felt it would’ve been okay for a release, The relationship between The Jacksons and The Time ultimately was fizzling out because despite them having fun together, The Jacksons could not get past the Prince connection, specifically knowing what Joe Jackson would say, and how Prince would react especially after the incident at the Janes Brown concert. However, The Time, specifically Morris, argued to keep the elements of the song, in which Michael agreed.
So, the two respective bands parted ways and Michael ultimately shelved “Jam”. The song was allegedly considered for the Victory album tracklist, but once it was shelved, it was replaced by State of Shock, which ironically is another song that had a history of drastic changes due to falling outs. However, some of the elements of the song were used for the final version during the Dangerous sessions.
Michael would later on revisit the song in April of 1991 for the ‘Dangerous’ album, that one being produced by Michael himself, Bruce Swedien, Rene Moore, and Teddy Riley.
