First off, LF is not their biggest problem. It's barely even a problem. 3B, a 1B with a concussion, a RF who crashed through a wall, and a $33 million 33 year-old player performing well below his potential are all far bigger problems. Second, cap restrictions are not only about money. They're also about draft picks. Why should we take that hit through extra spending when this is a team that clearly doesn't look WS-bound.

If you are rudderless, which the Yankees certainly are, you have three options. 1) Sell off players and hope you can be better next year. Improve your farm system, which sucks. 2) Trade for better players and hope you can make a run. 3) Remain rudderless. They literally chose option 3. Incredible. Give the Mets credit. They went big this offseason. It failed miserably. They decided to completely retool. It cost them money, but they had a real plan that will make them better in the long run. Meanwhile the Yankees hold onto their dumb contracts (far worse than Scerzer and Verlander had in Queens) until the team is completely harmed.

The Yankee Roster has been flawed for over a decade, Trashman has proven he does not know how to construct a championship roster, absent his ability to grossly outspend every other team in MLB. Last year was even a worse Trade deadline for Trashman, as all the guys he traded for have produced zero for the Yankees. No left Fielder, no bonafide Closer, not quality starter outside Cole. I do not believe Brian Cahsman is a good GM, he has to go, period and take his analytics team with him. I could care less about the Yankees making the playoffs, because in many of the years they made the playoffs, the Yankees had virtually zero realistic chance of winning a championship.

@@jakes3799 Those are all issues, but not having a left fielder enter a season is a cardinal sin, not having a closer not gonna get it done. Yes Stanton is playing injured and awful. I did not believe the Yankees should have treaded for another 200 strike-out right handed power hitter, when they needed a left handed power hitter. Stanton and Judge simply represented too much redundancy in the line-up, with Judge the superior athlete, and that has killed the Yankees. The Rizzo Traumatic Brain Injury case management is very likely a case of medical malpractice. Don't get me started on that horrendous Donaldson/IKF trade, what a freaking disaster from the start. To think that IKF played 3rd base, being one of the lightest hitting infielders in all of MLB. He puts bat on ball, but his offensive stats simply will never align with that of a corner infielder, and with him in the lineup you must be ale to make-up for his offensive deficiencies with production elsewhere in the line-up.

@@jamesmichael5475 Going into the season with one hole that you hoped to fill either at the trade deadline or from within is hardly a cardinal sin, especially given the lack of LF option on the mark. Their bullpen is one of the best in baseball. It's their only strength right now. So I can't think of a weaker argument you could make. I do believe that Stanton is a problem. But describing Stanton as awful is pushing it. We need more out of him than we're getting, but he's on pace to hit 40+ HR over 575 AB. And don't try to tell me that you were against trade when they did it, especially given that we gave up nothing to get him and got the Marlins to take on large parts of his salary. Also, aren't the Yankees in 4th place, barely above .500, and 12/10 games back from the Orioles and Rays respectively? Both of whom are young and dynamic teams with untapped payrolls? So how do the Yankees have the luxury of saying they are too good for a player who has put up quality numbers at one point in his career? I'll point out that IKF, an infielder, has the most games played of any of your outfielders and that Jake Bauers, a journeyman, has the second most home runs among Yankee outfielders...so yeah, I think rolling the dice on a guy like Laureano has basically zero risk/all reward potential. Guys sometimes roll back the clock in a new environment. Since he's spent several years on the worst team in baseball, it stands to reason he might improve if he's on a team where he isn't the only talented player. And no, I'm not an A's fan.
@jakes3799

@@colejoseph8072 I didn't realize he was a waivers player. That does change the calculus a little. Still, he was waived by the WORST TEAM IN BASEBALL. What does that tell you? Yeah, moving to a better team can be helpful, though he'd be moving from the team last in BA to the team 29th and 27th in OBP to 26th. So - not looking good. And I'll do you one better by saying that moving from pitcher friendly Oakland to neutral Yankee Stadium will help. But none of that will be enough. Laureano has just been too putrid. And he's right-handed, which is the last thing we need. And yes, RARELY, some players benefit from a scenery change. But all signs point to Laureano NOT being one of those players. And the turnaround would have to be so massive, that it defies believability. On the Yankees depth - You can spout deceptive IKF stats all you want. Fact is, the Yankees currently have 6 players that can play OF on their roster - Judge, Stanton (almost 40% of AB in OF), Bader, Bauers, McKinney, and IKF, all of whom are far better options than Laureano. That's 6 players for 4 spots. Even putting Laureano in AAA would be questionable. We'd have to boot someone from our 40-man. AND we currently have Perreira, Franchy (a LH), and Florial (a LH) playing OF. That leaves one spot. But good chance we soon promote the Martian - so ZERO spots. So even as a waiver pick Laureano makes little sense.

I disagree with Michael, just making the playoffs without being truly competitive enough to win a championship is a fraud, perpetuated by Yankee management, trying to pull the wool over the fan's eyes. Also we fans really do need to acknowledge that Cashman’s penchant for sign old veterans in the middle of the steroid era when guys could somehow still play well past age 35-36 definitely played a role. But at a minimum the guy has been completely outmatched since 2010 and the level of failure in the Yankees future is fully the result if the past decade of Cashman’s decisions finally coming home to roost. This team is not a few years from a World Series we are barreling toward multiple decades of not even sniffing a title because we will need a complete rebuild once Cashman is gone and until that happens we are getting nowhere.
