The 70s was an awesome musical decade. Singers just got up there and sang - they didn't have to be the "triple threat" or sing 5 octaves and do vocal "gymnastics" like they all seem to do now, and they didn't even have to be particularly good looking. They just sang from their hearts. :) So glad you enjoyed this, D. (I was a little kid in the 70s and had an older brother & sister who listened to all the good stuff from the era, so I was indoctrinated into it almost from birth.) :)
@td3993

The vocal gymnastics of the last few decades are obnoxious. While it can show talent, sometimes what a song needs is sincerity, control. Vocal gymnastics can otherwise be described as over-emoting. Sometimes it can sound like someone's getting on with the microphone. It sounds ridiculous.
@dixiejules
3 жыл бұрын
@@td3993 I 100% agree with you. A few gymnastics I can handle - but Celine Dion type, Christina Aguilera type, Mariah Carey - they do waaaay too much for me. All have amazing voices, but the gymnastics just wear me out. LOL Heck, we real folks just want something we can sing along to in the car without sounding like a kid from the 70s trying to do the Tarzan yell.

Although this song was written from a dream Murphey had it's jam packed with mystical signs, spirits, and portents. Just a beautiful, well conceived song. Needless to say, in the dry flat lands of the Midwest, the entire concept of a wildfire is very dangerous since it will spread very quickly, and the winds will magnify the blaze. The Yellow Mountain is a sacred place. A whirlwind or tornado is a dangerous thing, but in Native American folklore it's a spiritual one, especially when someone seems a part of it. Native Americans and people in the Wicca religions plant by the dark of the moon for a healthy crop. Hoot owls and killer frosts are omens of death. So on.

D. Lynn, you are on point. The music industry has completely changed since the mid 90's. That is why the melodies are not nearly as strong today for the most part. Today, the record companies would probably not even sign elton john, led zeppelin, the stones, the who, van halen, the cars, the doors, michael jackson, billy joel and all the great groups from the 60's to the 90's. So that is why you are liking some of the older songs.

@@DLynn I work in the industry. It is not about making great creative music anymore. It is more about certain formulas that make money. But being an artist has nothing to do with money. Ironically, I think they would make more more, if they went back to the old artistic format. The beatles are largest selling group of all time with a combined net worth of close $3B. So you can always make good money when put out great intellectual property.Technology and social media play a role in this too. Some good and some not good at all. Now that the younger generation is more exposed to older music through the internet, film and so forth, they are loving. They had no idea that the music of the past was so good. You seem really objective in the way that you look at music.

Not that music is bad today, there's some pretty good stuff out there, but musically, the 60s and 70s I fear will never happen again. D. Lynn, It is a sad tragic song about a pet pony for a little girl who named him "Wildfire" . She and her pony died after Wildfire got lost in a blizzard. Great review, this song also triggered many images for me. I was a boy when this was a hit. Mystical vibe to the music and a great story. Her pony, Wildfire, busts down his stall and she goes looking for him in a blizzard and gets lost and neither come back. The man telling the story is visited by a hoot owl outside his window...the man takes this as a message that the woman and Wildfire are coming for him and they will ride off (probably to heaven) together. Thanks again for your reaction.

That's why Taylor Swift is so popular.....she writes the songs so when she records or performs them there is a special emotional bond that comes through to the listener. There were many great songwriters who have penned really huge hits for other artists but there is just something that happens when the writer performs their own song that we all can really feel.

The girl and the horse are set up as representatives of death. The farmers crop failing is the doom of his livelihood. The hoot owl is a harbinger of death. Who is going to die? Probably the farmer. Wildfire coming to take him away is a metaphor for Charon, the ferryman who delivered people across the river Styx from Greek mythology. Do not let the gentle AM gold tones fool you. This is a death song. And quite metal, if you ask me. This belongs on the same Playlist as "Knocking on Heaven's door" by Bob Dylan, which was also a protagonist's death song.

Perfect way to describe it. “I feel like I missed something.” I feel the lack of respect given to music from the 70s and the focus on what came out of the 60s is why you feel you missed something. The 70s was an evolution out of the basics of the 60s. It took it to a whole different level breaking stereotypes and new equipment to handle the evolution of music. In short? Lol

You mentioned in that review that Nighwish was new to you. Music is found in every part of this planet and discovering new music that you like is a constant joy and adventure. If you look a little deeper into the bands you learn so much. When the band is from a different country you can pick up on their culture. Let me recommend a couple of bands from two very different places. First from Japan, an all female hard rock/metal band called Band-Maid and the song "Play" live. You could choose any of their music and be impressed. These ladies Kick ass!!! The next group is called Jinjer and they are from Ukraine. Their song "Pisces" live session would be where I would start. Again just about anything they do is great. If you like my recommendations I am happy to send more to you. As a native Nebraskan, I believe this is supposed to be a true story as it took place during the great Nebraska Blizzard of January 12th 1888. Michael Martin Murphy was a very big Country Artist in the Mid 1970's through the 1980's. Had several big songs. Can you perhaps review his Duet with Holly Dunn "Face In The Crowd" from 1987? It was a consensus Top 5 Country Song on the 3 major charting services at the time. R&R (Radio and Records) and Gavin Report where it reached Number 2. Peaking at Number 4 on Billboard. Thanks.
