Handel Weekend in Wardour Chapel, Wiltshire given in 2023 by Cherubim Chamber Choir & Orchestra,
conductor Harry Bradford.
RECORDER SONATA 8 in F
Allegro - Siciliana - Allegro
Chapel Organ Michæl Maxwell Steer
Possibly composed in 1712 shortly after Handel’s arrival in London and published by John Walsh as part of a nominal Opus 1(!) in 1732; the music of the individual movements is found in various other versions including the final allegro as an organ concerto. The solo part of HWV 369 is normally taken by a recorder, flute or oboe, with cello continuo, but here it is played in the style of a two-part organ voluntary popular at the time.
The chapel organ by Samuel Green dates from 1791, but was expanded in the 19thC with the addition of a second manual and pedals. The registration here is 1) Diapasons + Flageolet; 2) Dulciana; 3) Diapasons + Cornet & Mutations.
Cherubim Music Trust is a charity that loans professional-calibre orchestral instruments to advanced music students in the UK, aged 15-25, who cannot afford one that matches their ability. See cherubimtrust.org/
