True. Think thats the most accurate summary I've read on here. Most of the comments are just people giving it the big licks trying to prove their Scouse credentials by saying how much "better" Fowler was. Only thing I'd say is he didn't move directly from Liverpool to Man U. Obviously that sealed his "anti-legend" legacy with Liverpool, but the truth is he slowly undermined his Liverpool legacy for years. He always entertained transfer interest throughout his career (and particularly at Liverpool-it was clear he wanted to play his prime years somewhere else). So yes, he moved to Man U ultimately but he'd already shown he wasn't a "fan" of Liverpool long before that. LFC had basically washed their hands of him well before then. Man U didn't get a prime Owen and Owen didn't want to spend his prime years at Liverpool. The irony being Liverpool got what turned out to be his prime years anyway and the relationship between player and club is still dogsh!t.

Liverpool fans had no problem with Owen at England. The real problem is he rejected Liverpool THREE times and ultimately spent more of his professional career at the clubs he rejected Liverpool for than Liverpool F.C. 1. Before Benitez's first season started he abandoned ship for R. Madrid whilst Rafa was struggling to keep Gerrard at the club. 2. When Owen got turfed by Madrid Liverpool came in for Owen and he chose Newcastle which may have been more of a lucrative option. A good deal for him, but ultimately a 2nd slap in the face for Liverpool. 3. Newcastle get relegated and released Owen on a Free, with no fee on the table he could go anywhere and chose Man United. Which would be the 3rd slap in the face. The difference with Fowler is that Fowler was kicked out when he wanted to stay and returned when there was an opportunity given to Fowler to return.

Liverpool, and more importantly Rafa Benitez, didn't want Owen back when he left Madrid. I've heard Ian Rush confirm that himself. Rush even spoke to people at the club to try and make it happen, and called it "a mistake" to not bring Owen back in. That's also around the time that the media campaign against Benitez really started to pick up. It was 100% the right choice, though. Why did Liverpool fans not ever really warm to Owen? Because there was always a perception that he cared more about the England team and his own brand.

Lol, a bit baffling and bullshity. As a scouser in the kop at 25, at the time, watching Owen, Gerrard and Carra, Owen did make his name in Anfeild not for England, we loved Fowler as he was another Scouser but Owen from Chester., was something else, special. But we lost love with Owen when he went through he was bigger than the club and went to Real Madrid, a European rival for silverware, not giving Benitez a chance ... but LFC won the Champions league a season later in 2005, without Owen....Fowler stayed at the club? Owen also forgets this and also forgets LFC supporters support in the Alanta world cup, upto and beyond that gosl agaist Argentina, when he was never played, as Glenn Hoddel in charge of England, never saw as a striker...we were all furious. Owen got a lot of serious injuries by his England duties....🫡🤤 And everyone else states below that Fowler would never sign to Man U.🤔 Sorry O, but Team O thought you bigger than LFC.🤫 Otherwise we'd all YNWA 😂

When the prime minister send navy boats in the 1920s to Liverpool to “sort them out” during economic crisis when the whole of Liverpool went on strike. And has ever since been treated like shit by the rest of England ( hillsborough, Sun newspaper etc..) is anyone surprised that fowler a scouser is favoured over Owen. There’s a lot of history before Owen came along. They weren’t wrong though, Owen did play for Man U, no loyalty when you play for your staunch rivals. Btw I’m not a scouser

Who cares? Owen sold out long ago. He’s never connected with the fans, that’s why. He may have won the Golden Boot with us but he would work hard to be fit for England, even if it meant missing Liverpool games. I never liked Owen, even when he first broke through. As for the “patriotic” comment, he should know why, it was pretty simple. England turned their backs on Liverpool starting with Thatcher in the 80’s and Liverpool will never forget it. So it was a pretty dumb comment by Mr Owen.

The thing is fowler could take a 30 yard pass on the volley pass it to the wing whilst still on the run linking the play be in the opposition box in seconds and then finish it. Before his injury he was ridculously good. The knee injury took so much of his box to box running and sharpness. This is mainly why fans loved him so much more. He was just a better footballer than owen before his injury. After injury, yes Owen was better by a little bit. And yes Owen was a superb player just below world class and maybe for a few games was wc. Reminds me of players like ginola or di canio really great but just below. With Fowler, if he didn't get the knee injury I believe only 3 players would have bettered him Ronaldo, Del piero, Berkamp and maybe Shevchenko

I think there might be something in Fowler being extra loved because he was Scouse, but that's partially because there's perceived loyalty and, well, that was proved correct. You still see Liverpool players like Hamann, Dudek, John Barnes who are loved at Anfield and aren't exactly scousers, so this comes off as a bit precious to be honest.
