When he starts to really smile into the notes towards the end; his teeth and smile look identical to a young Rockwell Blake. Also has a similar ring to young Rocky.

Absofreakinglutely! Agree Completely! Rocky told me that lifting the soft palette - which engages the zygomatic muscles and causes a smile -- helps bring more focus/energy into the sound. At this point Spyres doesn't always have the support needed for consistency- but over the last 10+ years has done the work, improved his technique and is a Joy to listen to. He has a much bigger bottom than Rocky - but his agility, and the colors of his mid/upper range are very similar to Rocky's sound in 1980 when he did Cenerentola at CityOp! Spyres also is as an actor (as Rocky) -- unlike a popular South American tenor who only ever smiles when he's sung a high note and is proud of himself- or, when the audience applauds....lolol 😜😜😜

@Kevin Mark Rocky is from Plattsburgh NY, and I went to college there. We both studied with the same voice teacher - her collection of students were much like a family, and she was Such a character!!! Rocky was already "somebody" when I started studying with Renata, but she loved to tell stories! She would play me cassette tapes of him singing - she had a recording of his competition for the 1st Richard Tucker Award (which he won) -- if I recall, he sang Cessa di piu, Ah mes ami, and something else. At that point he had been doing Barbieres in Houston with Sills, Cenerentolas with Flicka, and I forget what all else. A number of us went to see the first Tucker Award concert at Carnegie - I grew up right outside NYC - and it was Serious collection of singers!!! Crespin, Plishka, Pavarotti, Horne, Leona Mitchell, Price(?).....anyhow....LONG list...lol - I was 22 and in heaven. Renata took me backstage with her to see Rocky, and we met a TON of the performers.

Yeah absolutely... But there is a big difference in Bergonzi and Spyre's voice which I know you guys noticed.. Bergonzi is a master tenor but he lacks color in his voice.. This guy is new but his voice has color on it and it's beautiful to listen and so far, he's the tenor who dared to hit the low notes in this piece while other changed the notes higher.. Such amazing guy with bright future in music industry..

I disagree..... very very good comparing to other aspiring tenors who think can sing this aria. True, there are some mistakes here and there, but overall I loved his interpretation, especially on the first part of the aria. The coloratura is quite clear cmon. Maybe not JDF's clear but who can beat the peruvian tenor :) - Good work Michael!

That wouldn't be difficult. Lawrence Brownlee's a 'caprino'. I can't understand why he's so popular. Maybe because he's good-looking and personable. That seems to count for so much these days, more's the pity.

Florez has always (until lately) reminded me of a soprano kazoo. Not enough kinds of sounds in the voice. Lately, his voice seems to be roughening some, and at the same time his emotional expressiveness is coming forward.
@absdyna
6 жыл бұрын
I disagree, I prefer Brownlee, and no, he is no 'caprino', maybe Tamagno. Florez pushes his top, as did his hero, Maestro Kraus. Brownlee is a very light tenorino, as such his much faster vibrato is not so uncommon.
@sarahdaniel411

I have heard both Brownlee and Spyres in the past year. Spyres was much better at conveying emotion and did so seemingly effortlessly, whereas Brownlee sounded stressed and conveyed no emotion at all. It was the Charlie Parker opera I heard Brownlee in, and the Cadogan Hall recital where I heard Spyres. I heard Florez the last time he came to Dublin, where he sounded tentative and seemed like a shy person in his introduction of the French repertoire. Subsequently I heard him in an online broadcast (can't recall which opera), and found that while his voice seems to have roughened in the past couple of years, his charisma has shot forward and he is able to command attention in a way I never experienced from him before.

When he sang tuo at 1:16 he found the position. Keep that stretch even in the middle and low and the coloratura will be sung with support and not so reliant on the throat. I can hear from you singing that the larynx moves a lot. Touch your finger to it while singing, you'll see.
