Not, what he said. He said, "He's trying to steal it this lap, because he probably doesn't have the next lap." Implying Stember was trying build enough of a lead early to avoid having to out kick anyone at the end. Completely logical thinking, seeing the strategy Stember used in this race.

@@Trancefreak12 dude cmon stember could beat anyone in this field at any distance.... stember was a beast at 800 and 1600... he wasn't trying to avoid a last-minute kick he was just way faster than anyone in the field. Now, with hindsight knowing the success Stember had as an Olympian you really think there could have been a different ending to this race?? No one went with him because it was impossible for them to do so. He could have waited until the last 100 meters and blown by all of these at his discretion. The other athletes proved to simply not be as great as Stember and he decided to show his greatness with 600 to go because he wanted to not because he had to in order to win.

@Cffx 45 - Some runners are not fast sprinters, so if you wait until the last 100 meters, the faster sprinter will win. If you do not have a fast sprint, keep the pace high to get a gap over the others, or to deplete their energy so they have nothing left to kick with.

Steal, not steel. Anyway, the guy who said that was probably right. He did slow down on the last lap, but he demoralized them with that early kick. He probably knew he wouldn't outrun them at the end if he started his kick when everyone else did. When he got so far ahead so early, it also took away their incentive to run as hard on the last lap. If some of the others had taken off with him, it might've been a different outcome. It was a ballsy strategy and it worked.
@mikebronicki6978

Luxury Brown the unexpected early kick surely had an effect on the pack and his primary target, the kid who won the 800 meter race earlier. "Demoralized" might be strong but it had to get into their heads a little bit... especially the kid with blazing 800 meter speed who was probably counting on having the best kick.

Wow! he had enough heart to remain on his legs and standing at the end, too. That was an amazing kick! with 600m, he just took off! imagine if he had held it in until the last 400m instead, jeez... stember's the man

He was so fast that most of the time he barely registers on camera. Godspeedy Gonzales.

This man is a god damn genius! He treated the first two laps as if it were a mile run then he went into an 800 meter dash for the last two laps, allowing him to cause a massive gap in between everyone and him.

Go to video time 3:53 and you will see that he is more than a few meters past the 100m start line. Last 100m in 14 seconds at best.

Can't watch this without Enter Sandman in the background tbh, seems like a very appropriate choice of music

He knew he was getting out way too quick at the start, he stayed back, trailed them, and took off. Amazing performance.

This is the single smartest and most in shape athlete I have ever seen. Watch him pace himself PERFECTLY to be even in the middle of the pack and conserve his energy because he KNEW what he could do to them, and showed it at the exact moment and held that INCREDIBLE speed for that far.... it’s truly amazing

I don't understand why the 1997 state meet (videos) is nowhere to be found. There are many other California state meet videos going all the way back to 1983, but the '97 meet seems to be invisible and forgotten.

Wait... was this the SAME Michael Stember that Alan Webb made quit track for like 3 years after utterly embarrassing him with a move very similar, albeit far more explosive for Webb, back in the 1500 Olympic Trials? I imagine it is. Very few people can run at that level, particularly that young. Two guys having the same name and also being greatly talented runners would be exceptionally unlikely. Had I known it was GodSpeed against Webb, I'd have been pulling for Godspeed...clearly... except he DID pull a little douche move in the semis which made people root against him and made Webbs devastating move elicit a massive cheer from the crowd.
