It's so worthwhile watching this whole episode on Netflix. Even in separate interviews the chemistry of the four band members is palpable. You can easily see how they made one another better. And they all offer great reflections on this classic recording.

I like hearing or seeing rough cuts by artists and the insecurities they have; it proves that they're only human! Finished versions full of confidence and commitment seems so beyond what normal humans can do... but there was a path before they arrived at that.

I never liked it but heard an analysis of the musical merits on youtube and begrudgingly thought maybe I had misjudged. Still for as big as that song was I cannot help but prefer any of about 75% of their songs other than that, at least of their output to that point.
@steveblog1

@@etamommy I think it’s a combination of songwriting skill, musicianship, timing and luck as to how any song is received. A whole lot of stars need to align for a hit. You make a good point in that some artists have better songs, which weren’t liked as much as others or which weren’t released. There are many album tracks or b-sides from many artists, which were superior to single releases.

Michael Stipes, I feel is as genuine as a person can be. I am not gay, but I saw him say in an interview once when asked about coming out, he said, "I don't think I ever knew what love was, until I realized the feelings I had for him". He was so sincere. I am totally opposite of his political views, but I admire his conviction and his commitment to what he believes in, and it makes me try to be more understanding of things I don't agree with. Why? Their music is so captivating and the lyrics, all by Stipes, have been a part of my artistry, and my basic soul since I heard them. If that's the case, I must have at least some common grounds with them....

Anybody who is looking for demos of popular songs is a big fan of the artist and normally just find the demo interesting and different because it doesn’t sound like the hit song they’ve heard so many times. Even if it isn’t as “good” die hard fans always love hearing different takes and versions of songs. The more content they can get the better, if every artist had video documentation of every album they made, the big fans would pay to watch it be made and love every minute of the footage. Artists should never be worried about demos sounding weird or off. The real fans love it all and they know it’s not the finished version.

The demo tracks from Fables and Life's Rich Pageant are FANTASTIC. I made playlists from both ordered them according to the album release and they get played more than the final tracks. Just listen to how cool the guitar sounds in the Begin the Begin demo, SO COOL. The Demo's are fully formed musically it's amazing that aside from Stipe's unfinished vocals the songs are whole and complete on the demos from being played live already. They are like a little live performance of the songs but with the advantage of studio recording.

The raw and unpolished, unproduced, nature of a demo of an unfinished song after you've heard the finished product for years shows you how much progress was made between getting the idea on tape and sending out the final tracks for mastering. On the other side of it, I used record daily onto 4-track cassette and when going over older versions of songs it would almost annoy me that parts were "missing" or wrong because they hadn't been worked out yet, so Stipe is probably looking at it as if someone took a picture of his messy house and he'd rather they not, but that's because the artist can be their own harshest critic, and the rest of us don't see the demo as ugly.

When you're "harsh" on yourself and the most demanding critic, then you're open for brilliance. The key thing is to really know when to stop being negative and embrace your good deliverance.
