Michael You instructional videos have been helpful to me . Even a 67 yr old tenor in a church choir can learn .

I don't know if it just comes down to technique or the way they were recorded, but every opera singer (especially tenors) that I listen to pre 1990s just sounds better than those of today. There are certainly some really good opera singers and tenors these days, but I don't know, they are just missing something. There isn't the same magic. I'm someone that really appreciates an "Italian" sound too, so perhaps we just lack in those types of singers. There are a lot of good spanish/ south american tenors around, but they all seem to sound the same to me, perhaps it's the school of singing in those countries. There is a certain something that they lack or have too much of, but I can't quite put my finger on what it is. I get the sense they all try to emulate Domingo, who I'm not a huge fan of (depending on what he sings) and who's technique I think was quite flawed. However, someone like Carreras who I also think had a flawed technique, to me was far better. At the end of the day, just give me Pavarotti everytime! I think a large part of the problem with alot of new tenors is that they all lack the correct mask resonance the Trimble always talks about and that gives you that beautiful bright sound that we can hear in his own voice. Even talking about Sopranos though, someone like Anna Netrebko , who is no doubt a brilliant Soprano, for me, still lacks that special quality that someone like a Tebaldi, Scotto, Callas or Freni had that seemed to just cut through everything and hit the listener right in the chest. Would be interested to hear your thoughts on this Michael on whether I'm just imagining this, am biased to a certain sound ( which I think is partly true) or whether you think what i have said is somewhat true. P.S wonderful rendition of L'alba Separa dalla Luce Lombra. I am currently learning it myself.

@@jcleivaamoros Fair point. I think there certainly is some of that but I wonder how much of it is the industry though and perhaps priorities not being placed as much on the voice as opposed to other things. I think everything in opera is important, the acting stage craft etc, but for me the voice is and always will be the most important thing. I don't think the industry values the voices as much as it once did, but then again perhaps they just have to make do with what they have, especially when it comes to tenors. I recently read an interview of the tenor Vittorio Grigollo, who seems like a nice guy, but frankly is cringy to watch and I can't stand alot of his singing and overly hammed up acting. He thinks that opera singers should use microphones because he believes people's hearing has gotten worse due to the constant noise we are always surrounded by, as opposed to years ago. How a famous opera singer who regularly performs at the met and la scala could say something like this is just amazing. The whole point of opera is that it is accoustic singing, that's why it is so hard to do well. Him not understanding this, just says it all Frankly, I think opera singers like him just need to learn how to sing properly and then, just maybe, we will be able to hear them. Although, I think I would like to hear him less. Unfortunately, we live in a world were excellence and mastery of a skill is harder and harder to come by in all fields.

@@ssr6036 great points sr. Industry an arts have a point when they go in different ways. A product produced by any industry has to be good eough to be sold and make money. Art is never good enough. Specially for a true artist, and it doesn't mean it´s the search of perfection, but the search and aim for the sublime. HUGE DIFERENCE

The amount of squillo and the quality of the vibrato can testify to the correctness of the technique. This performance is a wonderful example!

First time hearing Mr Trimble…very impressed! He sings on the core and has a rich tone. If I had one criticism, I’d like to hear a bit more of a vertical opening on the high note.

I amno expert, but these modern singers voice is something like metallic, they might have excelent techniques, but they lack of the warmth and melodic voices of former singers..... it seems to me like the difference between vynil and cd.

The Italian is over-enunciated and so the style unidiomatic. Piu legato, prego.
