Randomly recommended but my grandad had a red one of those when I was a kiddo (early '90s) and I think it's great that these ones have been saved and cherished.

The sd1 Rover is a real classy car I remember my dad had a 1978 sd1 in brown with a V8 3500cc absolutely loved it 😍

I had the SDE 3500, what a car! I still miss it even though I used to spend every single weekend fixing things. Every single part of the electrical system quit, but I'm an electronics engineer so I didn't have to spend the Big Buck$. Window switches, headlight switch and dip switch, headlights, gauges, fuel tank sender...... it never stopped but I wish I still had it. Even the dipstick broke! How? 3 automatic trans overhauls, one major engine job - put in a used Range Rover engine. And I still loved it, crazy. Before the Rover I had a Triumph 2.5 Injection MK II, another one I wish I still had, at least it was more reliable than the Rover and just as fast.

I had the same blue one 40 years ago, drove it to France, wherever I parked had loads of admirers round it as if they’d never seen one before. Exhilaratingly fast and cornered as if it was on rails, nicknamed ‘the beast’. Went in for an oil leak and got a bill for £3,500. Gone but never forgotten. Ah...that exhaust burble!

From what I am seeing, SD1's are really starting to become cool. With only 1500 UK cars left on the road and a similar number SORN I think now is the time to think about these as real appreciating classics (just do a rot check before you buy lol).

That car built today with modern electrics, fuel injection, air bags, modern rust-proofing and built in a union-free factory - it would be such a winner. It is as modern-looking today as it was then,

I was never a lover of anything that came out of the BL stable, at this stage I was a ford man and drove Mk2 Granadas. But I have to say that the SD1 always sounded sweet with the V8 and they have aged very well, they do not look out of place on todays roads. Unfortunately I can't say the same for the Granada.

Beautiful cars. Shame the guy with the red one ruined his with those awful bonnet vents and tasteless aftermarket alloys, but the others were great. The black one, on an E-plate, must be one of the very last.

Parts supply for these cars (SD1's) is actually VERY GOOD. A couple of of US Spec cars have appeared in the SD1 Club magazine. Rimmerbos.co.uk have a huge array of parts and in my experience are very prompt and efficient at delivering parts here in the UK or overseas. They also have NEW old stock European style headlights in stock...

Phil Newstead ; Don’t confuse nasty with truth.....I’ve owned these cars since the late 80,s and believe me adding knobs bells and whistles is totally classless and in mine and most other enthusiasts opinions is destructive to the marque. If you don’t want opinions don’t post .

they are aging really well, shows what a great design it was. I am looking for one now, i found a nice LHD p6 which if nothing else comes along I may go for. but yes, we used to buy them for small change and pull the engines out for kit cars and scrap the rest, now I feel bad.

Not many. Any E plate cars were amongst the last manufactured in 1986 and sat in a field somewhere until being registered in 1987. Technically they're 1986 cars on an '87 plate.
