He passed out due to a chest cold that he had. He was dehydrated by the cold (which lowers your blood pressure and speeds up your heart rate when you are dehydrated) and also the medication he was taking for the cold had antihistamines in it also accelerates heart rate, dehydrates you, and also lowers blood pressure due to the sedating affect. Add that to the fact his physical stress he was under and it caused a drop in his blood pressure that caused him to faint.

My blood sugar crushed during the game and I couldn't even undress by myself. It's so scary when your body betrays you. Steve Mason was very sick, so that's why he didn't start this game. It was definitely something floating around the locker room because it was reported that Neuvirth wasn't feeling well at all before the game started, but he had no choice but to suit up and get to the net, thinking, hoping and praying that he'd be able to fight through it. Turns out that as soon as he went into the typical goalie stance during the time of the faceoff, everything just went dark, the lights got blurry, and boom. He fell. This was taken from a press conference Neuvirth gave upon being released from the hospital. I think it was just a bad sinus infection, which can feel like death itself (speaking from experience).

5:13 It happens quickly, but when the goalie drops, you can see the closest ref skate towards him. The ref only sees him out of the corner of his eye, and he begins immediately skating towards the goalie, but doesn't look at him. His eyes stay on the face-off. Weird, but something about that split second screams professionalism to me. Like he'd seen goalies pass out many times before. I would have stared in shock for a second, wondering if it was a joke.

Anytime a Professional Player Collapses during a Game is very Scary & Shocking. In Michael Nuevirth Case. He would be Alright. Assumibly Coach of the Flyers said to him. Michael go home & Rest. The Team will play in your Absence. Get well.

I hope that poor soul is OK. I'm sorry about what happened to that goaltender. BUT it warms my HEART ❤️ to see how fast he got medical ATTENTION! The compassion of all the members of New Jersey Devils, & the sympathetic support of every fan of the Wells Fargo Center that night. 😢 😭 🙏 🥺

I like how the Devils medical staff came out to help.

50 lbs of equipment - that's how much on average an NHL goalie wears. I'm actually surprised this doesn't happen more often. Glad that he's okay.

we were at the baby pens vs phantoms game and we were wondering why they pulled their goalie and left the arena so quick. after the game we were listening to the radio and they announced this happened and we got out answer why he was pulled. we might be rivals but still one big family. hope the guy is ok

This is the reason why the NHL has a policy in place that an ambulance rig must be on site before the puck hits the ice.
