The first genius of the modern world. He tells you how to live a happy life with his own experiences and a real insight into the Greeks instructions about the same subject. His only close peer in the art of the essay to date is Emerson.

I'm happy being myself, but if I had to be someone else, it would be Michel de Montaigne, whose essays I turn to when I feel myself in need of a stiff dose of sanity, or even plain common sense.

A lot of this philosophy from olden times comes from Taoism. I recognize some of it. Buddhists would say it has a few Buddhist elements (animals being our equals). You might really like ChuangTzu and LaoTzu's Dao De Ching.

@@genkiferal7178 Thankk you. I do follow the old Chinese writing. I have a copy of the Dao, the Analects of Confucious the writings of his disciple, Mencius, as well as the Tang poets Li Bei And Tu Fu. Sadly, I read all this in English.

@@abrigoadolfo2593 I only read English. Hey, at first, I was turned off by the book ChuangTzu, but after reading a couple translations, I almost like it better than TTC. I also love the chapter in LiehTzu about Yang Chou. All of those I got free online. Have a good day. The world has gone ape-shit. I need the light-heartedness of Taoist sages right now.

This is an excellent discussion. I've read and enjoy Montaigne. I don't understand all the negative comments under the video and don't find any of them accurate.

Vive le bagatelle ! But for the role of the piquant gadfly Melvyn Bragg plays so adroitly, the experts would have gone on regurgitating endlessly like dons on a low battery. IOT on the BBC is one of the most enlightening programmes for the thinking animal. Que sais-je?

Is this a BBC monopoly talk about Montaigne? Horrible philosophy talk.
