Thank you Andrew. I found this presentation by accident. Oh the childhood memories! I was born in Michigan City back in 1960. My dad {S. Joseph} was born in Michigan City in 1928. My dad's side of the family were immigrants from Syria to the United States in 1900. My dad served in the United States army in the Korean theatre. He died at almost 92 and is buried with military honors here at the Riverside California National Cemetery. He and my mother were married for 62 wonderful years. I am the oldest of four siblings. My great grand father and grandfather worked their entire lives for Pullman Railroad. I used to walk by that abandoned and closed railroad yard on my way to St. Mary's Catholic School. Back then, in 1965 and 1966 a child of six years old could walk home without the parents worrying about it. I lived at 303 Washington Street. Right on the corner where the post office now stands. My uncle owned and lived in a small home right across the street on Wabash, right next to the J Mar Ruby factory. I would at times walk home down Franklin Street. I even remember watching from our upstairs window, Robert F. Kennedy deliver a speech from the Court House right across the street. Being of Middle Eastern background, I never felt any discrimination. My three best friends were wonderful black girls--three sisters, Kim, Sheila and Loretta Watkins. I have wondered over the years how their lives turned out? My dad would at times take us to "Scholl's" dairy on Franklin Street for ice cream. There was a little grocery store named "Cherry's" that my mom would walk us to when she needed to buy something quick. From our little home we would walk to the "beach." I appreciate this trip down memory lane. I don't remember too much but it seems like a lot looks like it did a half century ago. I was hoping that you would have driven by the Court House and by the Post Office. Would have loved to have seen in real time where my childhood home once stood. Also, was hoping you would have driven by where the old, iconic, Jaymar Ruby factory once stood. Those three places: The Post Office; the Court House and Jaymar Ruby Factory all stood within one block of each other. LOL. I kept saying while watching the video: "Andrew, turn here, turn here!!!" Oh well, it was amazing to see Michigan City nonetheless. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.

I have lived here for 65 years. Some parts of this city are rough and have crappy buildings or homes but for the most of the city is quiet and not alot of crime. Most people come for the boat or the lake.

I was born in that hospital. Sad. I really thought they would make something else out of that building. I lived in City until I was 6 years old then moved to LaPorte and still attended Michigan city schools. Moved away at 18 and went back 11 years later over the state line in Michigan. Lots of relatives still live there and most are in Trail Creek.

Best thing MC did is open up Franklin Square, should've never closed it off to begin with. Also made Pine & Washington Streets a 2 way.

Well, you took a drive by the old hospital as it's being demolished. The new hospital is less than half a mile from my house

I used to live here, and although it's not my cup of tea, I will say that it had its upsides now that my values have changed. Would I raise kids here? No but at least I can still instill patriotic values in them here.

@@chris_stoller18 Same here. My dad grew up in MC back in the 50s and left in the early 70s. He never wanted to go back, but he became an ordained minister and moved back here to help build my uncle's church and that's how I ended up there. While it wasn't all bad because I liked the library, Michiana shores, the beach and had some good times at the YMCA in the 90s (when it was still open) and such but let's just say there were a lot of people that went out of their way to make me feel miserable. I'll come back and visit here and there, but I've moved on to bigger and better things.

it was MONEY in MC, GARY, South Bend, INDIANA and Chicago Illinois, Michigan, plus other surrounding cities! These cities had Great Work back in the day! Steel Mill, Railroad, Colleges [Staff], athletes, art, architecture, beach property owners, businesses. so much history! Google! I was a tour guide one summer for Barker Mansion! eery but educational. back when kids waited for summer job program to begin! Gary, Chicago, Michigan had many black "rich" folks too! I had a few bougie relatives and friends!😂 i used to listen to my elders about the good ol days! My mom's generation partied all over Indiana, Michigan and Illinois!🎉🎉 By the 80s it was going down hill😢😢 I miss the little city!

@@chris_stoller18 Ah, those of retirement age seem to be content there which is alright. I find it interesting how many of my friends/family say they want to leave but never did. Also, I find it interesting that a lot of the things the younger folks liked and enjoyed were taken away one by one. The concession stands at the beach, firework shows, Oktoberfest, skating rink, Marquette Mall, etc. are all gone. I even saw pictures of rollercoasters and water slides in the early 1900s there. MC used to be a lot more fun.
