Does anybody realize how much knowledge this man has ? He knows everything I'm amazed he deserves so much more credit.

@@AreaCode514 Well he doesn't own the collection. If he did, like the owner from Mile High Comics, he'd definitely be aware of the value and of its importance. Value was placed on the comics by a for profit company and people paid for them because they had value and people preserve them because they have value. You wish to ignore value yet it's been an integral and inseparable aspect of Comics since their commercialized inception.

Randy's a legend, and he looked the same 30 years ago. At the MSU Library in 1985, I tried looking up obscure space opera author E.E. "Doc" Smith as a joke, with no luck. Randy didn't even break stride as he walked by: "Try Edward Elmer Smith."

I'm stuck inside during this covid-19 mess and ended up watching this video. The amount of knowledge Randall Scott shares is brilliant. That collection is so special.

At one time I had a huge comic collection comprised of 30,000 comics. I regret selling them all now. I had complete runs. That Library is amazing. I would love to see all the Golden Age issues. They are rare and thats where the real value is. I would love to have his job.

15:58 "you have people come here to read comics?" response - "Yes... thats what the reading room is for" its sad that most collectors now buy books for the value, or like to look at the picture on the cover as opposed to the story that's inside of it.

Just to comment on the Jack Kirby /Marvel stuff, Jack did co-create Captain America with Joe Simon in the 40s. At the time the publishing company was called "Timely", not Marvel, even though they published titles like Marvel Mystery Comics. It wasn't until the 60s when the Marvel brand really established itself to what we all know today. Stan and Jack worked frequently together and helped breathe new life into some of the classic Timely character like Cap, Human Torch, and Sub-Mariner. Jack was instrumental in the creation of many of the Silver Age Marvel heroes as he would conceptualize them based on Stan's notes. For example, Stan came up with Galactus, but Jack came up with that character having a herald who traveled before him... which became the Silver Surfer. They worked together back in the Timely days too, but at that time Stan was a pretty low level employee, writing text stories for some of the books. I believe he was a teenager at the time.

With out Joe simon jack would have been washed up in the great depression. captain america was joe simon's idea and told goodman to give him and jack to create cap and they will publish it. They left timely in 1941/1942 and went to dc. Later Joe was suing marvel and jack was their "witness" that the creation of captain america was there and they were only letting timely publishing it.But marvel told jack if he came to their side they would give him alot of work. So he ditched joe and went to marvel and got nothing for his creations until he passed and his family sued. SO he screwed Joe over which Joe gave Jack his way to fame. Thats why I dont like jack as a person but his artwork is ok. But Joe Simon's work is better in my opnion.

how the hell does he decide what to buy with his annual budget? Out of all the stuff they get donated and all the stuff that they have in there, whats left? how would you narrow down which books to get? Is the money spent just on upgrading some of the more beat up books?
