These dudes was in Rowan county in NC in my small town at the grocery store back in the fall. Same dudes with the blue violin. I watched them for a few minutes and I could tell that they weren't playing and the speaker/amp had the music in it. They just seemed like they was trying too hard kind of an over the top act to sale and conceal their decitfullness. Body language just looked wrong. I wanted to walk up behind them and unplug the violin cord and see if it kept playing but my wife told me not to. If I see them again I'm doing it to see if I'm right. Like you said, I'd give a person money that was actually playing an instrument and was from my area not traveling around the country lying about their situation scamming people by putting on this act to get money. I watched a panhandler in Charlotte, NC, around 15 years ago; go from the street corner begging to walking down the block to a parking lot and getting into a very nice Cadillac Escalade that looked fairly new like only a few years old. Nicer vehicle than mine. I said right then I'd never give someone money that's sitting holding up a sign begging for money. For a long time I'd holler out the window at them to "get a job loser" until my 3 year old son yelled out the window to a guy riding his bicycle minding his own business "get a job you loser." I quit hollering out at them but never give them money. A few years ago I asked one of these guys, I knew was from the area because I seen him walking the streets for some time; that was at Walmart in the largest town in my county holding up a sign that said "hungry, anything helps" so I asked him that if he was truly hungry I'd take him to get him something to eat and his response was he needed money to get food for later, so I offered to take him in Walmart to buy him what he needed and he didn't want me to do that he just wanted money to "go himself later." I think he was wanting money for alcohol or more likely drugs so he didn't get any cash from me. I don't give them money either because if they truly needed help that bad there's a homeless shelter/soup kitchen in town, organizations like Salvation Army that will help you with bills and clothing, and plenty of services provided by the government to keep someone from starving and being homeless. Everywhere I go I see signs for help wanted. Hell the McDonald's is paying $11 dollars an hour start off pay now up to $13 depending on experience. There's a mobile home factory in my small town that you can make over $1,000 a week with incentives and its production work. They go in a 7:00 am and might be done by 1:00 pm if they get their quota for that day finished. No reason anyone needs to be a panhandler/begger/bum in this country unless they choose to live like that. That's my opinion anyway. I work too hard, pay too much taxes that some goes for these programs that are in place to help this situation already, and have enough of my own problems to add giving my money away to someone who dosen't want to work to make their own way in life. I could go on and on but I'll end it here.

A couple years ago I was at a Wal Mart and heard beautiful violin music. Soon I even recognized it as one of my favorite you tube artists. I went to listen and was amazed at how they got every note and musical expression right, exactly as I had heard it so often on KZitem. It wasn't long before I could tell without a doubt they were not playing the violin exactly the same as all the notes that were coming from the speakers. I just walked away wondering how some people can possibly stoop so low and how do they get away with it. Well one thing I know for sure, they may get away with it for awhile but their will be a day when we all will have our life exposed and will be judged for what we have done, both good and bad. I believe in that truth and that's why I don't get too upset any more. I do appreciate what you do though. If more of us did that, I believe there would be less of this going on. Love your train videos by the way. Keep up the good work.

They used to come to my town and stay the whole week camped out at out local Home Depot. They tried to get money from me at the intersection between both plazas and it was during a middle of the day without anyone around. So I had a nice chat with our bearded friend. I directed him to the homeless out reach in my town run through a local church. Where they could get a one time loan, employment assistance, temporary mailing address, a place to sleep, and housing assistance. I then told him to say hello to you and tell you I like your You Tube videos. When they finally got to the Iron Mountain, Michigan Wall Mart. I ended our conversation with the fact that you would be filming them and posting on You Tube, as well as Meta "formally Facebook". The same person replied to me in a comment I left in another or your You Tube videos of them that you posted. Once, in Dunfermline, Scotland, a bunch of schoolkids were copying panhandlers that they saw on the High Street at 5pm on a Saturday. One of them shouted across the road to me if I had any money. These scammers really piss me off because I really AM a musician and I really DO play live sometimes. I do Street busking without a backing track or even through amplification. I also have a sign clearly spelling out that I am NOT a Vietnam veteran, I am NOT homeless and I don't have a bunch of starving children at home. I'm just an old man who likes sitting around playing music for folks, (mostly bottle neck slide on a guitar and singing). I never ask for tips but I'm certainly grateful when someone drops a little cash in my guitar case. I see busking as a time honored tradition, something pure to be done without deception of any kind. Keep exposing these fakers. They make us all look bad in the same way one power-tripping thug cop makes people suspicious of all the good cops.

Just saw a couple of these violin scammers here in northeast Alabama. Of course it was at my local Walmart which has had a growing problem with panhandling over the past few years. Walmart doesn’t do anything with them because they technically are off their property, and the city doesn’t do anything about them either. My husband and I know we are not obligated to give these people money and we don’t. These people are obviously not in a bad way if they can travel all over the country. If you want to help people give money to a reputable charity or a local homeless ministry. These folks begging at the Walmart are not the ones that need help.

I lived in New York City for 20 years (I still have to go there now and then-- and it's ironic but I play violin. For real.) But anyway I was approached over the years by many panhandlers. I usually was polite and said no. And they moved on. In a big city all you need is the courage to hear "no" 90 percent of the time. That other 10 percent people give you money. And it adds up. Tax free. So yes they are "professionals." And yes they are probably also getting assistance like Social Security or other things. My new job is selling advertising. And ironically I get "no" 90 percent of the time too. I'm not justifying what they do but I will say if they had the courage to "go straight" they'd make a pretty decent honest buck. Getting someone to part with any money when they don't want to is tough (and most small businesses don't get that money spent advertising always works out better for them). The best thing to do when these people approach you is say no. Don't explain it. Just say no and don't give them anything.

Not gonna lie. They got me a few times. I thought they were legit buskers, and the music was beautiful. I'm no violinist, I didn't notice they weren't playing the right cords. I even got emotional at such a beautiful piece of music filling the air at King Soopers one day, sat in my car and cried. I didn't have any money to tip though, just told them how amazing and talented they were. 🙄 After seeing them all around town, a different man and woman, different van, kids sitting all around a stroller, wife holding the sign. Same exact sign and same exact songs as all the other ones....I started noticing their scam, lol. Now I can recognize them a mile away. The reason it's so frustrating and upsetting to so many is that this takes away from all the genuine hard work it takes REAL violinists to become this good. It's a crafted art, not a side show. And, these scam people are not financially suffering at all. This is one of their many scams, and guaranteed they all have a home base, a house, food to eat, their children are not going to bed hungry. Believe that. I see many, many homeless people and old vets on corners with their companion dog, barely able to walk and frail, just hoping for a meal and food for a dog. People obviously in a struggle and needing help, houseless and alone. If you feel inclined to help someone, buy someone a full meal, help them feed their pet. Donate to a pet shelter. Donate scarves and gloves and hats on cold winter nights. Give someone a coat if they need it, we all have plenty of them in our closets. Pay a random utility bill. Pay it forward. Give them more than $1.....sacrifice a $50, so they can actually get something they need. There are a LOT of people in need who are not scamming and need the help the most. You just have to look around.
