NOTE: For the month of March 2024, I will be uploading footage I recorded during the 2023 shipping season but haven't previously posted. Early in the shipping season, I made the decision to reserve some video clips so we would all have something to enjoy during the off-season while we wait for ships to return to action. If you haven't seen it already, I recently posted my video showing the highlights of the 2023 shipping season. It can be viewed here: • 35 Great Lakes Freight...
Here is the Michipicoten arriving in Duluth, Minnesota before midnight on May 14, 2023. She was arriving empty to load taconite at the Canadian National dock in West Duluth. The ore was to be delivered to the Algoma Steel plant at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, a 26-hour voyage to the other end of Lake Superior. As she made her way in through the shipping canal, the Michipicoten fired up her spotlight to make sure the walls of the shipping canal were clearly visible. For the second half of the video, I caught up with the Michipicoten at Rice's Point to watch her pass under the John A. Blatnik bridge. Again, the Michipicoten used her spotlight to make sure she was lined up between the bridge pylons.
This was a mostly quiet arrival, with just the ambient sounds of the night and the clanking of hatch clamps being removed from Michipicoten's hatch covers. The sound of the night is almost soothing and relaxing... until we get some emergency sirens from on top of the Blatnik bridge at the conclusion of the video.
The 698-foot Michipicoten was launched in 1952, originally named the Elton Hoyt 2nd. She sailed for Interlake Steamship Company until she was laid up in 2001 due to lack of demand. She was then purchased by Lower Lakes Towing in 2003 and renamed the Michipicoten before starting work with her new owners. All of the Lower Lakes Towing ship are named after rivers. (Her fleet-mates include the Mississagi, Cuyahoga, and Saginaw... though the Mississagi was retired at the conclusion of the 2020 season and was scrapped.) In 2010, her steam turbine was replaced with a 6-cylinder 8,200 horsepower diesel engine. Her current cargo capacity is 22,000 tons.
