April 2023. Posted in the fondest tribute to my old flatmate and friend David. A proud son of Maldon in Essex, a truly gifted guitarist rated by his peers, and the best of company to all. Rest well my friend.
Two fantastic acoustic guitarists with their stunning version of Dave Brubeck’s classic. Always among Bert’s favourite guests at the Boundary Road gigs, Mick and David emerged in the late 70’s as a formidable UK acoustic guitar duo.
Often to be found sharing the bill with Richard Thompson, Wizz Jones, Duck Baker, Isaac Guillory, GT Moore, Fairport Convention, Pentangle and many other UK Folk, Blues and Jazz hero’s.
Their first album, “Russell Square”, was recorded for the legendary Transatlantic Label [LTRA 511] and released in 1978. Produced by Bill Leader and featuring Pick Withers on drums ( Dire Straits ).Their second album, “Pieces on the Ground”, was released by Jazzland Records [FL1022], in 1980 and features Eddi Reader on backing vocals.
Both albums are now rare as hens teeth, and much sought after by discerning collectors!
In addition to supporting Bert on the road and releasing several solo albums including “Active In The Parish” - an album of the year in Q Magazine in 1997 - David would go on to become part of the much acclaimed St Agnes Fountain, whilst Mick moved to the US in the late 90’s to pursue his career as a writer.
‘Take Five’ was composed by saxophonist Paul Desmond and originally recorded in 1959 by the Dave Brubeck Quartet for the album TIME OUT. It would become the biggest selling jazz single ever.
Recorded live on SONY cassette at the 1988 Boundary Road Christmas Concert.
