Having worked on the railway for 41 years and starting with British Railways through the privatisation years, I can say with confidence that the privatisation of the railways was an unmitigated disaster from day one. Shortly after the railways were privatised we were given what amounted to an ultimatum of accepting new conditions or bugger off. The last fifteen years I’ve been a senior signalling engineer working on major projects (£250 million plus) and the private companies were an absolute nightmare to get on with. Obstructive, rude, aggressive and totally unprofessional in their dealings with projects. A renationalisation of the system is needed. One central area of responsibility, not multiple entities blaming one another when something goes badly wrong.

I agree with you 100%. You have to be mad in the head to think that if the government can't run a railway well enough, profiteering businessmen will do it better for less! The only thing that keeps a private company honest is its competitors. I'm all for the private sector but you simply can't have true free competition with trains! Are you insane! At the bloody least refuse to subsidise them!!! That's just daylight robbery. Let them go bankrupt and send them to prison if they can;t pay for the damage to public property. Yes the trains weren't great before but the money being put in was worse. As Mick says the solution was simply more money in. NOT more money in and more money out!!! @@bobmalooga7249 may I point out to you 1997 Tony Blair opted to use PFIs (set up by Tories 1992) to build 100 new hospitals which meant all new hospitals built under the scheme are all privately owned at a cost of 12.7 billion to the public. 2000 Labour introduced the privatisation of medical services leading to NHS paying over the odds to private companies for certain medical procedures. 2003 Labour allowed NHS trusts to become Foundation Trusts independant businesses away from government control. 2004 Labour introduced payment by results which meant providers were paid a set amount for medical care completion allowing private trusts (as mentioned above) to cherry pick the easiest procedures to boost funding. 2009 Gordon Brown brought in the unsustainable payment regime after realising how bad the 1997 choice was for public funds which meant hospitals not purchased via PFIs can now be closed and sold off to private companies. My point is privatisation of the NHS has been happening for years so lets not hand pick what information we want to believe and actually look at the complete history. If we stop our blind faith or hatred for certain political parties we might wake up and opt for something that will actually help 👍

Those in the know - know exactly why things are the way they are and have already done their hedging. Stop the dividends and start investing. Stop the subsidies for investors and make an effort to preside over a viable business. Stop rewarding the execs, chancers and overseas owners. Pay people in a fair way. Milk Lynch is, as usual, brilliant. However, this is the rare occassion where I will note a 'fair play' to the presenter who allowed him to speak, and not cut across him in order to hear themselves spout drivel. It's such a regular thing for presenters to constantly interrupt, even on.the BBC now, that I found it literally remarkable..

I love your generosity of spirit but I think it's nearer the truth to say that these two tried their best gotchas and had no option but to remain silent as Mick calmly and factually ripped them up in front of them.

@@Humanimal47 I understand what you're saying. However, challenging and questioning (including gotchas) are part and parcel of the interrogation of a point of view. What compounds that media style is when there is the additional layer of constant haranging by the interviewer to the extent that the interviewee cannot fully respond. This was even attempted at one point. However, when Mick told the guy, "You have to let me answer", the guy actually did. This is quite rare.

I worked for Network rail from 2000 - 2008. Starting fro the bottom I worked my way up to site and machine safety controlled. Working on through private contractors like Bridgen, Coyle rail and several others. We would make good money, some made really really good money. 250 pounds a shift on the weekend. During Christmas period I was paid 750 - 900 pounds per day! Machine drivers could easily make double that or more, per day! The money being thrown around by these private companies was then of course passed on to the public, pushing prices higher and higher. While the levels of bureaucracy, paperwork and honestly lack of any real work being done were the end result. In the beginning on a weekend when we would shut down a line to do works we would stop our machines working by line of sight as a train entered the worksite on a parallel line, so the delay was minimal. By the end the electronic system had the machines stand down for several minutes, long before the train was anywhere near. And then only once we were given the go ahead by the system could we begin again. In the end we would work for a portion of the day. A job costing the tax payers millions, just for a couple days, without getting your moneys worth. The whole things turned into a joke, really. You see the knock on effect now, less work, higher costs. You pay.

The Government holds the purse-strings through subsidies. The reason wages were good until 2008 was the economy was booming in that time and the Government could pay those subsidies. When the markets crashed in 2008, wage freezes went into effect across the Western economies, followed by swingeing spending cuts and 14 years of austerity.
