For our American friends, when Mickey says "barnet" this is short for "Barnet Fair" (a famous London fair of yesteryear) and is cockney rhyming slang for "hair", and when Mickey says "syrup" this is short for "syrup of fig" (a laxative) and is cockney rhyming slang for "wig".

Guys, that's not the full sketch about 'America' from the same show by Micky Flanagan.... He goes into so much more detail about 'American enthusiasm' and how he embraced it when he moved there, thinking it would make him a better person... There;s a fine line between warm banter and cold viciousness. The US has invented the 'comedy roast' and reveal their lack of experience in warm banter which is aimed at informing and growing the target rather than an American roast which is from what I've seen simply used as a mean spirited excuse to tear the target a new one and it's misjudged and very painful to watch.
@AutomaticDuck300
3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the roast. If it's brutal and clever, I find it hilarious but I like offensive comedy. It's also taking the target down a few pegs, especially celebrities who can have a huge ego.

Richard Pryor's roast was funny as hell...Bob Saget's roast was utterly repulsive with zero laffs.
@iwanttocomplain

@@AutomaticDuck300 it’s not so much a cultural thing as I stated before actually. I’m sure Yankee’s are perfectly capable of mildly goading someone in a way as to not cause offence. These comedy roasts just seem like an excuse to be cruel though.
@AutomaticDuck300
2 жыл бұрын
@@iwanttocomplain Being cruel is the intention. Saying the meanest stuff but making it funny. Pure insults (like just saying "You're an a-hole") are not funny. Twisting an insult into a joke is hilarious. And I can give you numerous examples of that.
@iwanttocomplain
2 жыл бұрын
@@AutomaticDuck300 a joke can be a weapon. A roast is just a weird scenario where the receiver of the insult is not allowed to retort or defend him or herself. So it’s one sided. It’s so awkward to watch these people attacking each other on a strange ritual humiliation. That’s not banter. If it’s not warm hearted it’s not warm hearted. It’s nasty. If you stand up on stage and make fun of someone, whether it’s funny or not, you are a piece of shit. Because you are only really trying to hurt your target and not cheer them up.

I think the best thing about british humour is we all just naturally take the piss out of each other so its not like bullying because we get why we're being made fun of. British humour is more ruthless whereas americans are afraid to take that step into the "i dont give a fuck im gonna say it anyway" zone. I think we're more like "if you think of something funny-say it"
