Nice Video! Just a couple things: You should have kept titles up in the video for the lens you were using at that time. We might not want to sit through the whole 20mins to see a specific lens. A fixed title would at least let us skip through and know which lens is currently being used w/o having to rewind to find the intro for it. You could also put up timestamps to the various lens tests in the video for each lens in the description so we can skip to any lens we specifically want to see :)

Wow Great video! The wind was a shame but that last lens! Incredible. I've been using the sigma 1.8 with an apature wireless speed booster on my G7, but after I purchased my new GH5 which came with the 12mm-60mm lens included I've started to prefer that to the Sigma. Due to the lightness in the lens, the auto focus on the photography side and even in video surprised me on how good that is especially as a lot of reviews were critical on the auto focus of the GH5. Also the double stabilisation ensures smooth panning movement, perfect for my last vlog I did. The only two negatives I found in that lens is how little light it let's in compared to the Sigma and the lack of background blur unless zooming in. But Micro shots look great! Now what I didn't like about the Sigma on the apature wireless speedboster, is especially on the G7 is how much out of focus my shots were of some of the cosplayers I shot at a local convention I went to last. It seemed to be really difficult to keep in focus when panning around the subjects and if I moved a little too further back or too close I'd be instantly manually adjusting the focus constantly. I'll be uploading a video of that soon to express my experience of using the lens on the field to film at comic conventions ect. I have actually boxed it all away thinking about selling it, but I do like the lens, especially the sharpness when I finally get it to focus. Is there anyway to get it to shoot in auto on the GH5 in your experience, as that might solve the main issue for me. Especially when my subjects pose last minute like a superhero and I think I've got a descent photo to come home and find their faces are flat and out of focus. How does the metabones Speed Booster Ultra compare to my apature wireless focus speedbooster if you have experience with that? Again thanks for this great video and hope you can help with my questions and experience with the two lens featured here.

I have not used the aputure version but Metabones did a firmware upgrade for the Ultra Speedbooster to enable it to work with GH5. AF works fast for photography and very accurate. Continuous AF for video searches and breathes some but single AF works great.

Thank you for taking the time to do this video. This was awesome, extremely informative. Probably one of the best m43 lens videos I've watched, and I've watched a lot of them. Truly thank you for doing this. I would also love to see this same setup in the evening/low light with these fast lenses as that's one big complaint about the m43 is low light performance. I will definitely point people to this video when discussing m43.

Thank you for all that work. Truly appreciate the well done comparisons. The more I see of the Sigma 18-35 the more I like it. Sadly can't be doing much run-and-gun without the dual auto-focus and the size and weight and the huge Zhiyun Crane 2 to accommodate the lens. As usual, there's no perfect one-fits-all so I need to figure out what other lenses I need to consider if I do settle on the Sigma. Thanks again. 😉👍

Thank you for this!! I've been wondering how the depth of field is with the M43 Sensor and the varies lenses... What do you recommend having used both lenses, *Sigma 18-35 f1.8 or the Panasonic 12-35 f2.8 Mk2?* I love the more DoF with the Sigma 1.8, but I've heard of vignetting issues while filming, especially while the stabilization is on, and also have heard the AutoFocus motor on it is very noisy? On the other hand, the Panasonic lens will have the dual stabilization which is great, just not sure if I'll get that DoF I want from an f2.8 on an M43 sensor. Keep in mind, I'll be using this setup mainly for video. Not really vlogs though, more of cinematic films.
@TimothySunday
7 жыл бұрын
Great question and one that I still continue to ask myself. For cinematic looks and crazy DOF, I find myself reaching for the Sigma every time. Paired with the GH5 IBIS it's very smooth handheld. However, AF is terrible for video and the motor is very noisy so I mainly use MF when using it. (which is very easy with its incredible focus ring). The 12-35 is very good, super small and I can trust the AF on it. Nowhere close to the same DOF on it though. When I want a smaller, lighter kit, I tend to go with it. People absolutely love that lens with the m43 system. The sigma makes the setup huge and bulky...but with MF gives better results. It's a hard choice. I went with both and then I was going to return one. I just never ended up returning either one haha.

Wow, the best review I have seen regarding all the best lenses I have been eyeballing this past year. Thanks for this comparison. Feel like I'm going too watch it a few times over to narrow down my choice. Keep up the amazing work. Maybe you can compare the GH5 to the Sony a7R II, as that is the only other camera I'm thinking about because of the continuous focus when a subject is moving all around the place, such as filming kids running, or sports, etc. This is the one think that limits the GH5 in my book, is the auto focus is so far behind Sony... and Canon. What are your thoughts on the focus issues while filming motion? Should I just save up for the Sony?
@TimothySunday
7 жыл бұрын
+Jesse San Nicolas I've never used Sony or canon.i love the GH5 but relying on AF can get you in trouble with it. I would love to try it against the sony. What I constantly wonder is how it stacks up to the canon 1dx mkii. Which is a beast in size and weight but the only thing comparable in performance with 4k 60 and 1080 120 for slow mo. Plus it adds the amazing canon AF system. They're definitely the best in that realm.

For the best results in using AutoFocus, you'll want native lenses. But you can use something like the metabones speedbooster to adapt you nikon or canon glass. You just need to be sure and purchase the correct speedbooster. I'm actually selling these lenses and my GH5. Not because they aren't wonderful, just because I have a collab with another company in the works. So if you're serious about buying and you want better prices than new, hit me up on social.

Mainly to do with the maximum size of the aperture compared to the focal length of the lens. The larger the aperture the harder it is to manufacture and the longer the focal length the larger the aperture has to be to let in the same amount of light. A 200mm F/2.8 and a 400mm F/2.8 let in the same amount of light but because of the way magnification works the 400mm lens needs an aperture that's twice as large.
@pmconaway2861

Timothy, Liked the video. I do have a question. When looking for a lens, where am I going to find information about constant Aperture you mention on a couple of the lenses in this video. Basically, how do I know if a lens has a constant aperture when zooming?
@TimothySunday
6 жыл бұрын
Great question. If a lens has variable aperture then it will say something like F4-5.6. If it's constant than it only gives the lowest f stop. Like f2.8. Doesn't mean it can't go to f22, because they all can, it just means it can maintain an f2.8 all the way through the zoom range rather than changing from an f4.0 at wide to f5.6 at zoomed. Hopefully, that makes sense? Constant aperture zoom lenses are more expensive usually but always better for video.
@pmconaway2861
6 жыл бұрын
Your response makes sense. I've had an DSLR for years and the lenses always had an aperture ring and I figured being able to adjust the aperture was the "variable". I'm going to be looking for constant aperture lenses. Thanks.

That guy is so amazed talking about super creamy bokeh on those 2 times crop lenses. They look like shit if you compare the picture to a fullframe lenses that cost about the same. I totally misunderstand that hype about micro 4/3. It should cost way less than ff but it doesn't. So it's a mere waste of money.
@TechnoBabble
6 жыл бұрын
Really? What closely priced FF camera shoots at 4k 60fps, has true 1080p slow motion without massive compression and/or skipping pixels (which Sony loves to do), and has the same level of stabilization. Also look at the size of the lenses compared to the focal lengths and amount of light being let in. Some of the lenses for MFT are giving the same image quality at 1/4 the price or less. There are other benefits that smaller sensors have that have to do with the physics of how lenses and photosites work. Every camera has it's use, it's not just all about "mAh BoKeH" else there wouldn't be so many working professionals using the GH5 and GH5s.

Have subscribed. Audio is as important as the video , you sound like youve been squeezed though a mangle.

+Richard Parrington yea, wind noise was terrible out there so I used compressors and gates in post to cut it. But it also made my voice weird. I probably should have done a voice over for this one

No need for all that - use a dead cat. Never go outdoors without one (and if you notice, pro productions almost always use one even indoors). For a Rode VideoMic Pro, it's $39 (overpriced for what it is, but some things you just gotta have). Great post, by the way - very valuable - thanks!
