I won’t treat an Interstitial Cystitis patient now without a MicroGen. It’s part of the protocol.
When we first started with MicroGen, we essentially went after the recurrent urinary tract infection patient, to try and understand what was really present within their bladder.
Previously it was repeat urine cultures, and they were in and out of the office over the course of the year, five to six different times. The PCR testing and the Next Gen Sequencing are showing us so much more information than what's available in a urine culture.
It has changed the way that we diagnose and treat Interstitial Cystitis patients. So when they come in, that is test number one. If that's positive, I don't need to chase an inflammatory bladder condition. I need to eradicate their infection and then I can see if they're truly symptomatic. Because not all of these patients have Interstitial Cystitis and some of them have been labeled for years, and you eradicate their infections and their symptoms get better because we were never treating the correct thing in the first place. Now we can get them in, get them cleared, and these patients have very long spells before they have concerns again, and some who are simply cleared of their organisms and don’t return with these problems in the future.
It’s a light bulb- an elation for that patient to feel like someone knows what they’re doing. You are testing them with a Yes or No confident answer to a diagnosis that historically has been elusive and difficult to nail down. It's Great.
