But the Surface Pro 8 is just so much heavier that it looses everything tabletty about it. If you can accept that and see it rather as a light weight pc then I guess it is fine. But in the Pro X you keep the tablet experience AND you can use it as a pc. That is why I prefer the Pro X over the Pro 8 (i had both).

I went for the Surface Pro X sq2 as I am intrigued by the battery life and instant on ability. Also No moving parts! No fan to cool the chip and longer than average battery life. Yes I knew what I am getting myself into when I got the Surface Pro X and it is more of a media consumption device for me and in this area it worked great! I hope Microsoft doesn't abandon the ARM64 development as I see it as a viable alternative to Intel and AMD X86 platforms. I got my Surface Pro X SQ2 with 16GB Ram and 512GB storage at a great price, it even comes with the keyboard and stylus and I'm very happy using it. I enabled Windows Insider to try out pre-release versions of Windows 11, I tried to install as much native ARM64 apps as I can and I can see that emulated X86 apps do perform more sluggish. I managed to get Blender 3D to run with the Free Microsoft open cl and gl compatibility pack. Its not perfect but it runs and its good enough for me.

Planning on getting a Pro 7+ for the SD card slot and save a few bucks. I already have a 10th i7, 2060rtx laptop as my main, so the tablet will just compliment it when I don't need the power and require longer battery time away for the wall. I prefer a SD model so I can easily swap cards loaded with game ROMs between the 2. Only issue I might have is only the i7 line have a fan. Be interesting if a fan could be added in the i3 or i5 models, but the screen would have to be removed to see.

Everything about the Surface Pro 8 is perfect for writing/Academic works and even better for multitasking when compared to an Ipad as it actually runs a full-blow desktop OS. The few things I don't like about the Surface Pro 8 is the lack of an LTE option[You can get it from the Business sector ig], but you can always hotspot and it's not like you need to be connected to the net 24/7 the other thing is a lack of some sort of ecosystem that you get with Samsung or Apple. You have no dedicated mobile phone for this series or a watch for that matter. The only thing you have are the earbuds.

Very good review of practical things. I have a Surface Pro X and it's good enough for what I want to do on the road, which means I don't game and I don't edit video. I appreciate having the built in GPS. I navigate, wife drives. Perfect! Microsoft will not give up on ARM for a while. It's all about power consumption at data centers - and Microsoft has lots of them. Microsoft has been trying to get servers to move to ARM to save on energy costs for years. It's about operations per watt and cooling. If for no other reason than to force Intel and AMD to up their game, Microsoft will keep pushing ARM. I definitely like how cool my Surface Pro X runs. Data centers is one of the reasons MS recently released the developers kit for ARM with emphasis on Linux Support. Get all those server applications ported to ARM, get a good chip, save a lot of money and the environment at the same time. Something like a Surface Pro X Mark II with 20 hours of battery life will just icing on the cake for consumers.

Won’t the SP8 on battery saver still have better performance and similar life than the SPX on recommended settings?
@chroesu
10 ай бұрын
@@JohnSmith-gb8hd Forget that. I had the SP8 and switched to the Pro X because of battery life. Even on battery saving mode and dimmed display the battery life is just "ok". But I assume you have to work on the device like me then the battery is draining too fast. And I just use office, browser and onenote. On the Pro X I use it as a better chromebook and just install everything as apps over Microsoft Edge. I had to recharge the Pro 8 over the day and the Pro X lasts a day with 20-30% remaining. I just wanted to upgrade to the Pro 9 but I guess Microsoft wanted to use the same case for the arm- and intelversion so the Pro 9 is very bulky compared to the Pro X. I really like the slim design of the Pro X.

What I will say is this much I found out a few things on the surface pro x that if you don’t check the power plan advanced options apparently the surface pro x at default runs apparently 50% of it’s power but with that I also used some regedit commands which enhanced the gaming performance but the gpu isn’t that good my take on the surface pro x it’s good as far as it’s cpu is but as far as gpu it’s not that good as other gpus but I wonder if you put the power plan in the advanced settings up to 95 percent minimum and maximum not saying it’s better but I’m saying not completely in the dust it’s actually decent not to the point where it runs everything but as far as gaming yes it’s questionable but as far as everyday use it’s actually decent plus for gaming I actually gotten a stable performance out of some of my games

Amazing video! And thanks for answering the question about the speakers. Nobody had made a comparison of the speakers so far. I don't think Microsoft is going to abandon ARM anytime soon. The 8cX gen 3 is already much more powerful than the gen 1 and 2 and the Nuvia chips are coming next year. So Qualcomm should be able to brydge to a large extent the gap with Intel and M1, even if the emulation handicap will remain.... Apple Silicon was a big wakeup moment for everyone and Windows on Arm is here to stay....
@innoiso
2 жыл бұрын
Hoping that's the case, but will believe it when I see it. The Surface line has always been slower to updating than other OEMs. I would love for Microsoft to really invest in ARM to make something compelling. Do you know if it's possible for Microsoft to switch to live translation of apps like Rosetta rather than emulation like they're currently doing? Might be showing my ignorance
@TTOnkeys
2 жыл бұрын
@@innoiso currently it's not possible. Not sure about these new chips coming, but the big trick the M1 has up its sleeve is the fact that it has actual dedicated hardware specifically for translation between architectures. That's what will be needed for near native performance on the Qualcomm chips

I have a question. I currently have a surface pro 4 and have to upgrade. I got as a gift at the 8 i5 with the 128. I use it with my docking station for work, mainly online applications. I have a terabyte backup that I will set up for my files. My question is will this be sufficient or is it worth it to exchange for the 8 i5 256 or the 8 i7?
@dustypantelones

Depends on what you are going to use it for. i5/8 is perfect for 95% of people tbh. You would only need more ram if you were going to do more demanding things and you would only need more storage if you were going to save a lot locally. If you got a 128 for free and are going to use it for school and chilling and you aren't studying anything that requires demanding software you got a perfect device! I type this on my i5/8gb/256gb. I don't even need that much storage as I have only used 20gb.

My 2020 SPX (SQ2, 16 ram, 512 ssd) gets 14 hours of battery life running KZitem continuously at 40% brightness, wifi and battery saver on, bluetooth off. i5 SP8 might get your 9 hours in the beginning, but Windows updates will reduce it to 4-7 hours (which happened to my SP7 and why I switched to the SPX). There are numerous Reddit threads about the SP8s poor battery life. If you need long battery life go with the SPX and stay away from all intel-based SPs.

I replaced my Surface Pro X Q2 mainly because i couldn't disable the auto dimming when playing videos in full screen. The dimming would appear when the scenes were changing from dark to light and vice versa. And the dimming was delayed 10 ms which made it a terrible experience to watch at. Deactivating the ambient sensor and disabling the auto brightness in the settings didn't help. Switching back to the oldest gpu driver helped a little but it still auto dimmed the videos to a level I couldn't stand to watch videos. To my knowledge nobody has solved the dimming problem. But PLEASE RESPOND if you have a solution! Regarding development the SPX isn't supported by Docker desktop and native Docker in WLS2 didn't work propperly with localhost - the network (especially the download) was terrible slow. It can be fixed by finding the local ip with ifconfig and point localhost to this ip in the Windows hosts file. But the local ip will change everytime the computer goes to sleep, so pretty annoying! Beside of that it was a nice and thin all-in-one with a descent (not great) battery life, a high res screen (but pure contrast) and a very nice build quality. Compatibility wasn't really a problem for me except for the Docker Desktop. Edge, Office, Netflix, Spotify and my development apps like VSCode worked all fine at ARM. But I can imagine that Adobe products could cause some problems! So verify your needs before bying!
