Hi, Mike! Can you melt glass down in the kiln to the point it can be poured into a cast? thanx
@CaptMike

Not sure, I have never tried that. It is known as "hot" glass work. Look on KZitem for how it is done. Normally it is done in a furnace where it is melted in a crucible and can be accessed with tongs. If I am correct, glass liquefies around 3000 F and that is higher than most kilns will go (mine only go to cone 10).

Hi Cap't Mike - I'm trying to learn as much as possible before 'divin' in', and have been told the type of glass must be specific and that stained glass glass can not be used.
@CaptMike

Hi Jerry, yes and no. If you are going to fuse/tack more than one color in a project, then yes, the glass must be the same COE (coefficient of expansion). If you only want to do a slump project that is using only one color or type of glass, then you can slump/drape any of it (see my video on "Fun with Float Glass"). The problem arises when you forget and mix up the glass you have on hand (ask me how I know). It is difficult to tell 90, 96 or even clear float glass apart. Short answer, you can slump/drape any glass you have on hand, even fuse it if you are using the same piece of glass (to get a 1/4" piece). If you have more questions, please let me know.

@CaptMike

@@Classicmusicclass201 If you have applied kiln wash to the firing area and use a sheet of shelf paper you won't mess anything up. What you need to do is get a piece or 90 COE a piece of 96 COE and a piece of plate glass and cut each into pieces about the size of your tiles. Place the tile on top of each piece of glass and fire them one at a time and see if any of them crack after fusing. That is the only way I know how to test compatibility.

Hi Capt Mike, thanks for your videos. I purchased the large microwave kiln from Amazon to do test firings (so that I wouldn't waste energy firing in my Evenheat kiln). cassandra, I don't think so. How long are you firing for and what are the intervals (3 minutes each x 5 =15 minutes sort of like that). What kind of glass are you using (should not make a difference). I usually spritz a little Clear Coat Overglaze on my glass prior to firing. Still, you should mostly get shiny fusing.

@@CaptMike Thanks for responding Capt Mike. I did fire in three minute intervals, it took about 18 minutes to get red hot and fully fused. I used COE 90, Bullseye base with dichroic and clear on top. @@ilenereiter6636 Kiln wash is what is used as a barrier between the glass and the kiln shelf. It comes in powered form and you mix it with water to about a heavy milk consisty. Kiln wash is just another layer of protection. The kiln paper can only be used once or twice and it begins to go away. If you don't see the rip or tear in the paper, your glass is going to stick to the bottom. Kiln wash is cheap and easy to mix and apply. It's a good investment.
