Upgraded my RAM and SSD today. Your videos were very helpful. The SSD caused me some trouble, I tried using a Time Machine backup to the SSD but that didn’t work. I somehow managed to restore the HDD to the SSD and that worked. Other than that, the RAM install was super quick. My laptop is moving so so quickly now! I’m so amazed at these small changes making a huge difference to my 2012 MacBook Pro.

This is a very clear and to the point video. I especially liked your method of putting the screws back in. Turning the screws backward until you hear a click is something I learned 60 years ago when I was working as a radio repair technician. We had problems with screws in aluminum and plastics when they had to be repeatedly unscrewed and re screwed and the threads became striped if you did not hit the right thread. The same actually applies to all small screws, if you don't find the right thread, you'll end up in trouble. I often wonder if technicians are taught this simple technique or if each individual has to just find this out for himself.
@Rickmakes
2 жыл бұрын
I found it out for myself but I did deal with cross threaded lug nuts occasionally when I was an auto technician so I already had an aversion to cross threading. As annoying as cross threading is when a person uses the wrong size socket or screwdriver and screws up the fastener.

If the screws are stripped, you could google "rubber band stripped screw" to see a tip for removing them. If they aren't stripped yet, I would make sure you are using a properly fitting screwdriver. Then make sure you are exerting force inline with the screw. Put a fair amount of force down as you are turning. Needless to say, you need to be careful so you don't slip and injure yourself or damage the computer.

I have had this upgrade for 8+ years and haven't experienced those issues. Is your computer recognizing all 16GB of RAM?

I’m annoyed. Apple told me I could only put two 4s to make 8. And I asked them if I could put two 8s and they said no 🙄
@Rickmakes

Yeah, Apple will only do 8GB total. I've been running 16GB since 2012 with no problems.

Intel says 16GB is the max for this processor. That being said, I haven't tried 32GB so I'm not sure if it would work or not.

Would a 13" inch Mid-2012 Macbook pro with 16gb of ram outperform a 13" inch Early-2013 Macbook pro with 8gb of ram? Lets say they are both base models.
@Rickmakes

You could get better performance with the 16GB model if you are using multiple applications and switching back and forth between them regularly. In either case, I would upgrade the hard drive to an SSD. That can give them a huge performance boost.
