Round 3 of the Midas Historic Tour was held at the historic East London Grand Prix Circuit in the Eastern Cape on 28th of April 2012. This was the first visit of the Midas Historic Tour to East London. The competitors were enthusiastically welcomed by the local officials and race fans. The Tour has grown substantially over the past two years and the coastal race drew a stronger than expected entry. South Africa has followed the world-wide trend with resurgence in interest in Historic and Classic Motoring events.
The 7 round Midas Historic Tour began at Phakisa (Welkom) on the 25th of March 2012. After the East London event, 4 rounds remain made up of races at Kyalami on the 19th of May, Zwartkops on the 21st of July, and Midvaal on the 1st of September with the Tour ending race back at Kyalami scheduled for the 29th of September 2012.
Various categories make up the Midas Historic Tour, catering for all forms of Historic Racing Sports and Saloon Cars. The categories that made the trip to East London were the Marlboro Crane Hire Historic Saloon Cars, Sabat Lotus Challenge, Execuline Pre 66 Legends Production Cars / Pre 66 Sports and GT, Dicktator Pre 77 / Pre 84 Sports and GT Cars / Classic Thoroughbred Cars, and the Marque Cars. Once again the Historic Saloons and the Lotus Challenge made up the bulk of the entry. The local BMSC Saloon Cars rounded of a full sprint and endurance race programme.
A good crowd enjoyed a great days racing at the idealically situated circuit. The main event of the day was the 1 Hour Endurance Race for Pre 77 / Pre 84 Saloon Sports and GT / Historic Saloon Cars. The race was won by Dino Scribante in his immaculate Ford GT 40 closely followed by Ross Lazarus also in a Ford GT40. Barry Scott and Alan Kernick (Chevron B19) took a class victory and Colin Kean (Mercedes Benz) was first in the Historic Saloon Car category. The 2 sprint races held earlier in the day were won overall by Ferdi van Niekerk (Jnr) in a Chevron B19 and Bevan Schwarz in an Opel Rekord. Bevan took overall victory for the day followed by Willie Hepburn (Chev Camaro) and Barry
The Execuline Pre 66 Le Mans Sports and GT races were won by Ross Lazarus and Dino Scribante both in Ford GT 40's with Ross taking the overall victory for the day.
The Marlboro Crane/Port.A.Cool Historic Saloons always draws a large entry with the classes split to accommodate all the entries. The two sprint races making up Classes A to H were held with the Pre 77 / Pre 84 Saloon Sports and GT Cars and Classic Thorougbreds. First Historic Saloon Car home in both races was Willie Hepburn (Chev Camaro) with Bevan Schwarz (Opel Rekord) taking victory in the Classic Thoroughbred category.
The Sabat Lotus Challenge always provides a large field and the race in East London was no exception. The Lotus category had over 30 entries and provided very close racing in the four classes. Klippies Krige in his Lotus Replica 7 won both sprint races leading home Sean Hurley in both races. The Endurance race, contested by 20 cars, was won by Derek van der Merwe. John Glover and Neil de Later finished second and third, on the same lap as winner Derek.
The Marque Cars Index races saw Kevin Taylor (Ford Capri) winning race 1 and Michelle Perry (Ford Escort) winning race 2.
Bevan Schwarz took victory in both BMSC Saloon Car races in his very quick Mazda Rotary.
Round 4 of the Tour will take place at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit on Saturday the19th of May 2012.
