Beautiful work. I love that 3D printed roof. I can’t wait to get a printer up and running sometime soon. Looking forward to the video on clouds. They came out great. All the best, John

Thanks for the comment and such kind words, John! It took me a few tries with the clouds, but I think they turned out alright. At least they meet my low standards. 😂 I can’t say enough about the printer and what it’s able to do in terms of expanding modeling opportunities. Shoot me an email with your address and I’ll reach out to Santa to see if we can work something out: manddrr@gmail.com

Really nice update. I love the test track idea for trying out ideas and products for ballast and weathering - I may borrow that one as I will soon be starting work in my yard and want some good variety in the yard tracks. Great tip also on the AZ rock and mineral samples. I didn’t know they did that!

Thanks for the comment, John! Borrow away, it’s been really nice to work on stuff like painting, weathering, and ballasting tests at the bench and then transfer it over to the layout to get a good feel for how things would look before pulling the trigger on anything permanent. It’s REALLY been nice in that I have a very narrow space and you can see EVERYTHING from nearly every angle and so I’m trying to refrain from having to do things over. I’d rather get it (somewhat) right the first time. Also, I had no idea ARM did that either until I stumbled on them one night in between page tabs going back and forth trying to decide. Saw the samples option and it was a no brainer. I highly recommend their Yard Mix, it’s a fantastic dark grey/black color with some dark brown/reddish tones incorporated to add depth. It’s what I’m going to rock on all of my spurs and my eventual yard-when the time comes. Stay safe, my friend!

Hi Sean, the backscenes look great, I had a go a while back, I had to paint quite a few boards for my backscene. I think I had about 5 boards that were good and the rest were average so I decided on using printed ones, i was pleased I tried though. As usual your update is too short, lol! Thanks Sean, John

Thanks for the comment John! I think going into the project I was in the same boat, it was worth at least trying. I was afraid that the results weren’t going to be what I wanted but they came out nicely, or at least I think so. Something I didn’t mention in the video was I painted the entire backdrop two times because I had to “figure it out” with some trial and error. Testing colors, brushes, techniques, cloud type, etc. In the end I think it worked out well and I (think) I accomplished my goal of “adding” in a layer without taking away from what I want people to really focus on, the trains! I’ll work on getting some longer updates out for you. 😜 Thanks for watching! Be safe.

Wow your clouds look great. I tried to do this my self a few years ago following some "simple" tutorials and they didn't look remotely correct. I was like homer assembling the BBQ wondering why "mine doesn't look like that" :(

Thanks Jarren! For what it’s worth, I was in the same boat. I tried (and ended up repainting the backdrop twice) a few of the “simple” techniques as well without the results I was after. My hope is that someone out there in model railroad land sees what I’ve done (which honestly, was mostly just pushing paint around) and can apply it for their own layouts without the fear of needing to be an artist to accomplish it. Hopefully you’ll give it another try!
