Midnight is…certainly very different from anything the first arc had to offer. Besides the more obvious differences like Brambleclaw being a different character from Bramblepaw immediately or the cast consisting of seven cats and two point of view characters, rather than just Fireheart, there is also a shift in the style of the story they’re telling. The first half of the book was setup, and as such it got to be similar to the first arc’s plot-driven storytelling with personal interactions on the side. However the second half, during the journey to the sun-drowned place and Leafpaw…just being at home, with Cinderpelt and sometimes Mothwing, it was all mundane social interactions. Whether or not you like that is a matter of personal taste, and it’s not quite as bland as it could have been…but the rest of the arc would have been far better if some true development and relationships were established during this completely free time.
Side note: on account of nothing actually…happening during their interactions, I didn’t speak much about Leafpaw and Mothwing. But know that in this book she seems very eager to learn about Starclan and become a medicine cat, and doesn’t know yet that the dreams she is having aren’t the ones she should be having. Also, they are very cute together as friends, with Leafpaw encouraging her as she steps into her new role.
