The 623ft Portuguese ship Barbro G departing Duluth after loading wheat, the first oceangoing vessel of the year! Was expecting a quiet departure, as the piers were mostly empty and it was close to midnight, and have rarely heard Salties salute after dark but Nope! They saluted with an incredibly loud horn for a saltie, jump scaring me bad enough I came very close to dropping the camera! She departed bound for Almeria, Spain.
Built in 2010 as the Pacific Huron, she sailed under that name until 2018, when she was renamed Ortolan Beta Straight, then in 2022 she received her current name, Barbro G. Throughout her career she’s hauled wheat from the Great Lakes, primarily Thunder Bay, to various European and African ports. In December 2023 on her last Great Lakes trip of the season she grounded in the Detroit River, requiring several days and significant work to free her.
