I've been told that baking soda snow yellows over time. But maybe the white paint you mixed in fixed that

AnEvilJoke do you know if white paint fixes the yellow snow problem
@BardsCraft
4 жыл бұрын
I've heard that too, as I understand the snow turns yellow if you use the wrong glue. There seems to be variants of PVA glue, the "pure" PVA stays white when it dries, not sure about what happens to the baking soda (keep in mind don't use baking powder) I read more from here: www.ehow.com/list_7620383_types-pva-glue.html
@dkbibi
4 жыл бұрын
If I may, I've experimented a bit with baking soda snow and indeed it tends to yellow. I didn't try different pva brands though (used elmer's pva). White acrylic paint does work to avoid yellowing although I noticed that it alters the look of the snow a bit, it looks less grainy. Thing you need to be careful about is make sure you have well painted surface on which you apply the snow. I've noticed if you use baking soda directly on unpainted foam, card board, mdf or other porous material, it will yellow the baking soda from underneath as it let's air pass. Also unpainted baking soda will suck in moisture and paint from surface on which you apply it on. For example in this video, since the snow is applied on black terrain it would have make the snow darkned a bit overtime time if it wasn't mixed with white paint. Baking soda is very cheap and fun to work with, but it has a lot of downsides compared to crafting snow flocking (like woodland scenics). I suggest you experiment before making a big project. Although the snow can take up to a year to yellow which is kind of annoying. Also don't paint the snow with white after its dried (like you want to fix the yellowing), it looks terrible.

@@dkbibi I typically use valhallan blizzard from GWs texture paints anyway. but that would be too expensive for a terrain piece so snow flocking (I do have some) or baking soda with the right PVA glue seems the way to go

I wear a Kevlar cut glove on my off hand when shaping my terrain foam. For most of my wargaming terrain (found on eBay), I use a mixture of used ground coffee & black tea. No need to paint because it’s already a nice tonal Earth color.

Two, so far, going on three. It’s used, air dried in a very thin layer. If it’s sealed air tight or has just the slightest bit of moisture still in it when stored it will mold. But, if it’s well dried when applied and sealed, there’s no problems and it actually looks really good. My customers so far have been blown away by the realism of the “dirt”. It looks good and you save on paint. I do add a little shading and sometimes do a little dry brush highlighting. Just depends on the affect your looking for. Although in 28mm, it is pushing it a little. For smaller scales I use actual dirt and tile grout (un-sanded) mix. You have to bake the dirt beforehand to kill off any bacteria and fungus then mix 60/40 (dirt/grout).

That was very nice and satisfying. The snow paste effect was awesome, when i saw the baking soda, it would be a great addition to make some ice crystals by adding superglue to baking soda.
@jezeski2011
4 жыл бұрын
Super glue and baking soda dries instant and remains white/grey-ish. I doubt you would get the desired 'ice-effect' you are looking for. It's an old modeler's trick for filling gaps, among other things, and it dries super hard. Also, super glue tends to melt XPS on contact (unless already cured/dried), so would not be a good mix with this type of build.
