Mien New Year Song Kao Chiem Chao Yao Iu-mienh Iu-mien mienh. For more information on Mien people, please click on the wikipedia link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mien
I love this song. Actually most of his songs are great! He’s a true legend and I grew up listening to his songs.

I love this song!! I think Kao and his wife are like Michael Jackson and Madonna in the Mien community. :)

@Tevinseng: because when they sing, it tends to be the more poetic so they use the older dialects and grammar. This is the kind of grammar and vocabulary you hear in traditional chanting (cenv nzung/baux nzung). this dialect is more directly derived from Mandarin. Conversational and colloquial Mien is what we are used to hearing and most youth now can't understand the older forms.

This is a really great song! I listen to this song every year as the New Year comes around. It's sad that our culture is slowly disappearing... The newer generations don't even care, and the ones that do are more of the elders.

It is also one of my favorites and brings back a lot of good memories. Whether we care or not, you're right, our culture is slowly dying. It is a sad thing...

It's a shame that us Mien people can't come together and create a Mien Town or Mien Village here in the United States like Little Tokyo. It would be great for us Mien people to come together to learn and read our language. Passing it down to our children would be a little easier if there was a place designated for just Mien culture. Aside from my ranting, this is a terrific song. Laengz zingx camv.

@chengxiong95 The only similarity I know of is where Mien and Hmong are from. With the exception of borrowed words from other languages, the Mien and Hmong languages are completely different.

@gryxng Sorry to hear. I would say to ignore the BS but since you're talking about your in-laws, you can't just ignore them. Just ignore the negativity from other Mien people outside your family. On the bright side, not all Mien people are like how you described. If we can't grow as a community, grow yourself individually and set the example. Change starts within ourselves. Goodness prevails and others will follow suit.

@CHAOTIMES hmong and mien languages may no longer 'sound' the same, but they both came from the same root. that's why they are both classified into the 'hmong-mien' language family. this shared root indicates a shared culture once upon a time (probably Chu Kingdom 1030bc-223bc). genetically, hmong and mien are different, hmong are y-dna O3 people like chinese and mien are O2 people like thais and lao's.

@xaithoj no actually both hmong-mien people are o3 people, yao people are vast majority O3, the O3a3b-M7 marker is found in both hmong-mien populations like the she and bunu. mien only have a higher percentage of O2 than hmong because we lived closer to zhuang O2 people in China, most hmongs/miaos lived in guizhu/west hunan

@gryxng Not all Mien people are like that. Its probably because your in-laws have some problems that they need to deal with themselves but you can help out, if you don't want to that is okay as well. Let the time flow and kill the anger within them, it'll be over before you know it.

@gryxng You're ignorant and disgusting for making a statement like that. To say "Mien people r sick in the head", you're deeming 1 trait to an entire group based on your personal connection to one family. As a Mien American, I am more proud than ever of my culture, people and what we're continuing to accomplish despite the many obstacles we've faced as a small refugee community, displaced in America. You have no respect & it's a shame that you're so disrespectful towards your husband's fam.
