Migingo Island is located within Lake Victoria, in East Africa. Its sovereignty is disputed between Kenya and Uganda, as the boundaries between the two countries in the area are not clear.
It is the size of four basketball courts. Some note that between 400 and 500 people live, which would make it one of the most densely populated places in the world.
But what are so many people doing there? Fishing is the main economic activity. From there they can extract the Nile perch, a species that was introduced into the lake artificially. The problem is that it generated a negative impact on the ecosystem, since it killed another 200 species that inhabited the lake. Also, overexploitation led to fewer and smaller fish.
