exactly, if we really value their work then we should pay them the wages they deserve. Some of these labourers are actually very skilled (in a practical sense) with decades of experience. To pay them less than a thousand is a fucking travesty and injustice. words are empty, talk is cheap. The real way of thanking them is giving them a fair wage and better working and living conditions as they build our infrastructure. If you compare them to construction workers in Japan or Australia, they are treated like dirt here.

I am one Singaporean who proactively engages with our migrant brothers in conversation and sometimes gives them small treats to show my care and appreciation. I've gathered that aspiring migrant workers have to go through and pass a training course in their home country (out of pocket, of course) before they could find employment in a foreign country. A new worker in Singapore gets a starting pay of $23/day (for 8 hours of blood, toil, tears, and sweat), which is why many choose to do OT, including Sundays. If they choose, they could pay some caterer $5/day for 3 meals to be delivered daily to their dormitories, which is just rice and curry sauce; so they have to supplement their diet by buying more nutritious foods. The positive side of working in Singapore is that wages are always paid on time, workers are free to go anywhere when not working, and there are official channels for lodging complaints. By comparison, migrant workers in certain middle-eastern countries have their passports confiscated on day one, have no freedom to go anywhere outside the dormitories, are often abused by their employers, are unpaid for months, have no legal rights to terminate their contracts, have no access to any recourse.

Recently my block went through Home Improvement Programme and I had the opportunity to talk to some of the workers. All of them were very skilled and hard working workers but they said their salary was around $850 per month. Increment was only $1 a year. From this salary they have to pay $150 for food. All of them have extended families in India and Bangladesh who depend on their remittance every month. These hard working workers have not much left when they go back to their homeland. Singaporeans are protected by the government through CDC vouchers and cash payments to tide through rising cost of living but migrant workers and residents are left behind to fend for themselves. Without these workers, Singapore can never carry out its ambitious development goals. Hope the migrant workers get a decent salary.

Singapore since the colonial era, at the most basic level, was always mixed. Chinese and Indians settled on the island with the native Malays and their coexistence yielded a common cultural identity underpinned by common values that Lee Kuan Yew called "Asian values", a diverse cuisine that incorporated elements of the Chinese, Malays and Indians and a creole language called Singlish that is a mix of English and Asian languages. The migrant communities who have come from other parts of Asia are an extension of Singapore's original diverse identity.

They take up jobs that locals hardly would even consider, hence spare some thoughts to them. While at the other end, those who arrange their arrival to Singapore while scamming their money, what i will say is Karma is a bitch, what goes around comes around.

Genuine question. What makes a foreigner an "expat" or a "migrant worker"? Is "expat" the term for a white collar migrant, and "migrant worker" for a blue collar one? Or is it based on country of origin? Just curious!

Technically, anyone who works in a foreign country temporarily is an 'expatriate' or expat. Whereas the term 'migrant worker' should mean a worker who has immigrated to the foreign country. Finally Max interviews a migrant worker- those holding Work Permits in Singapore number over 1.1 million - over 18% of Singapore’s population! -we hear very little about them in the media. Those holding Work Permits outnumber those white-collar foreigners on Employment Passes or S Passes by almost 3 to 1. If Max followed this proportion he should interview 3 Work Permit holders for every EP holder he has interviewed!

Singapore is blessed by migrant workers and migrant workers are very lucky to work in Singapore. This is why there is a premium to get in. And all scams can be reported and closed. Thank our friends. Do not feel sorry for them. Just talk to them as equals on the street.

I managed work permit migrant workers before. Some employers provide their accommodation. Some also provide their meals. So not all are the same.

Being paid below the minimum wage is a violation of workers' rights. But how we can do Singapore is non-democracy contry. Just like the Gulf states? Rich country built on the blood of foreign workers .

He shouldn’t have to pay that much for the dorm at that salary especially when expats get housing allowance on top of their salaries. I think he should apply to Australia where they pay their workers properly especially blue collar workers. When my aunt worked overseas as a nurse and lived in provided accommodations in the UK, Middle East, and HK , she didn’t pay rent. If workers get sent off despite non fulfilment of full contract period, there should be an appeal process especially when they are still paying off their loans and the companies should be investigated on suspicion of kickbacks. They are vulnerable because they have no one to advocate for them. Is there a law against the formation of a migrant workers union?

Lodgings in the dormitory are paid by Contractor company that hires then including the electric and water bill which ranges from $480~$650 depending on dormitory rental, Medical package is also compulsory package by MOM bore by employers. Employer for construction firm will bore levy of $500(skilled) to $900(basic skill) workers, so all in all , we are looking at $2.8~$3+ k for normal worker. Exclude transport allocated to pick them to & fro daily.

Some of us know a few acquaintance of migrant workers from india or bangalas in our life as well , not all are that low pay. My latest acquaintance happened to rent a 1K room in a landed terrace, he is a driver for a local sme.

Honestly, I'm born and raised in SG, am a citizen, served NS, and don't feel at home here too, increasingly so with each passing year. But feelings are capricious, so some feelings should be ignored or overridden, not given attention to or celebrated.

Some companies with more compassionate bosses would pay for their dormitory costs & provide gifts or bonuses during festives seasons. One key problem migrant workers faced is unscrupulous agents.

I'm a foreign worker whose working in SG too. Just that Ive a slightly better pay, but Ive nvr looked down on anyone, and I especially treat these blue-collared workers with the utmost respect as they are oftentimes the ones doing the 3D works in our stead

When I was staying in Punggol, it was still developing. I saw most workers enjoy riding around the park, taking pictures around. Many are polite. Giving up seats to elderly, young children and those in need. Unfortunately, there are always some workers who get drunk and create trouble. Singapore is very particular about riots. We are a very small country. One happened in 2013 in Little India. I believe it was then rules are tightened. There’s always good and bad apples.

Even local born Singaporeans don't feel at home....so he is not alone....citizens are becoming more and more disenfranchised because of lack of empathy from people who are detached but sitting in ivory towers expecting others to be obsequious or obdurate.....those who don't comply....leave....i hate to say this but more and more the sincere genuine asian hospitality is forever gone in singapore...

I have to disagree. I think migrant workers prohibited from going out after midnight is a good move. This way, they are “forced” to have sufficient rest / sleep and hopefully this will reduce accidents / injuries in the workplace. It’s really for their own good I believe. I do hope there are more channels to help migrant workers. Once I witnessed an auntie who tripped and fell. Immediately 3 migrant workers ran towards her to help and offered her plaster. I hope the Singapore authorities take note of the challenges faced by migrant workers and improve the living conditions and lives of the migrant workers.

I don't get the math, Salary 800, expenses 200 dorm 300-400 food..that's 500-600..Then billis maybe 100, so 600-700..He saves 400? it should be 100-200 savings with his 800 SGD salary. I think he makes 1100SGD now then. I guess he makes 2.5X of what my driver in India makes, but he probably saves the same every month. These guys work a lot and don't save much. I guess it's better than Dubai atleast, there workers work in hot conditions for 10-12 hours.

Nice. U caught the math part. Clearly, trying to confuse the viewers. Obv he is making more but trying to downplay it. Not forgetting the money is used for beer. Nothing wrong with that, just that the choices you make determine the savings at the end of the day.

It's always impressive how Bangladeshi men are the fastest to give up their seats to elderly on the trains.
