19:38 I think this is the shot of the match. 1 ball is definitely snooked, so he hit the rail first, pocketed it, avoided the cue ball touching the 3, and postioned for the 2 to the side pocket. Beautifully great effort.

Wow that soft break is amazing! Everyone thinks you need to break like Shane but Corey's soft break opened my eyes. It's pretty smart since he can just play half table and never has to go around the table. That's not cheating - that's skill.

@RaymondJacobVEVO .... kind of an odd comment, to me, are you suggesting that players should seek more difficult ways to win games ??? And Mika is a poor sport twat, he's proved that with his unprofessional behavior at times over the years....edit.. and now I just watched Mika frustratatedly poke at the moving cue ball after missing contact on a safety response and causing the cue ball to hit one of the object balls. Really? Hoping to watch a rout here by Corey.

So in the 5th rack Corey not only hits it harder but also places the cue about an inch or so further to his right. The sixth rack he spends his usual considerable amount of time on the rack, places the cue even further to the right, hits it harder which leaves Mika tough for the 2. Was the sixth rack calculated to give it over to Mika but leave him like that? Wouldn't surprise me with a break engineer like Corey - there has to be a reason he adjusted what was working for the first 3 breaks he did.
@airofballin
7 жыл бұрын
no after the rack he said that he couldn't get the rack to freeze together. he hit it harder because it was no longer a frozen rack. he said all the racks before that froze perfect but for some reason couldnt get that one to freeze

That makes sense - he was on such a roll and to see him change approach was kind of dumbfounding. I like his response at the end of the match when Mika was bitching about his soft breaks - I don't make the rules, I play by them.

The soft break is an issue, however he wasn't pattern racking. As long as he can control the cue ball and the placement of the one ball, then he should run out. Sometimes depending on the placement of the balls they don't freeze. For example two particular balls (2) and (4) ball create a gap when put next to each other. All he had to do was swap around the balls and it would of froze. So to my point he wasn't pattern racking, he was just playing the soft break (which was really Alex Pagulayan's genius idea.

As a Finn playing pool, Mika is kind of a hero to me. He is the only guy from nordic countries (I presume) who went across the Atlantic to play professional pool and succeed. But the truth is he gets very pissed when he loses. This is because he is all about perfection, nothing else matters. I've seen him mad even after winning a match. Out of table he is not an asshole. I also think that the hand gestures after bad shots are not a good habit, they just take energy and give nothing back. In the other hand, the rules are pretty stupid in the DCC. Pattern racks and no kitchen rule? Terrible decision, makes the game less interesting. This is why snooker is killing pool excitement-wise, thus prize money-wise. Nine-ball needs kitchen rule and random patterns. Also magic racks are not suitable for professional play, just too easy to get all the balls moving in particular direction.

It just seems like Corey has Mika's #. I mean, every time they play it seems like Mika isn't at his best. I got lessons from Mika. Afterward, we shot for fun. Race to 11 for him, race to 3 for me. Loser buys dinner. He ran 9 straight racks. He finally broke dry and I ran 2. So I'm on the hill. I break dry and he runs the table. He was so nice that paid for my dinner. Great guy!!

Totally agree. Watch Mika when he breaks, the head ball usually, more often than not, goes into the side pocket. He hits it with speed, but loses control of the cue ball. It doesn't matter where the balls are placed in the rack, Corey gets a good spread & controls the cue ball. Look at this match, Corey was up 5-0. Mika didn't come back until he started jawing with Corey & got him to break harder. You could make the argument that Mika sharked him or Corey hustled him. I love Corey's responses at the end, though

If the rules allow certain actions to take place such as a soft break then there is no issue in doing so, where do you think safety hooks etc. came from. They are not in the rules but everyone does it. I use every advantage I can working toward a win that rules allow for. Sometimes you can out think opponents rather than out shoot them. To me that kind of chess match is the best game ever.

I've never understood why Corey is sometimes criticized for the so-called "soft break." It's not as if it makes that much of a difference when the balls scatter, and it clearly isn't making an impact on corey's individual game because the guy hasn't won any significant titles in almost 3 years. So, what the deal?

Little know fact about Mika...he doesn't like chalk on the table. He'll only tell his opponent twice to take their chalk off the table and then he'll walk up and knock it on the floor. It doesn't matter if it's Shane or Rodney, he'll knock the chalk on the floor and leave it there.

Corey has an absolute command of champion play. He's one of the very best I've ever seen. He runs racks and makes it look easy. The soft break has been banned in some tournaments. John Tate, Corey took the time to practice this whole thing and mastered it. Actually he mastered it so well, many tournaments had to change the break rules.
