A team of Sparrow Caregivers provided high-quality heart care to save the life of Mike Ball, who suffered a cardiac arrest at 57 years old.
What started as upper back pain on his right side one evening soon turned into cardiac arrest. His wife Pico found her husband unconscious on the floor with an abnormal breathing pattern. Pico called for emergency help while performing CPR on Mike.
Physicians at Sparrow discuss how rare it is to survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Mike was told he had a 3 to 5 percent chance of survival, and if he did survive, he would face severe brain damage.
Today, Mike has excellent neurological and physical function.
Nurses and Patient Care Technicians (PCT) explain the remarkable hurdles Mike overcame. He struggled to stand or function after his heart attack, but this quickly changed as he began his road to recovery at Sparrow.
Jim Sylvain, D.O., of Mary Free Bed at Sparrow illustrates the profound deficits Mike suffered due to the lack of oxygen to his brain during the heart attack. Mike’s occupational therapist at Sparrow notes simple math, organization, concepts, and visual perception as challenges for Mike at the beginning. His speech language pathologist at Sparrow describes the goals Mike set for himself so he could return to work as a personal trainer.
When Mike needed us, Sparrow Caregivers and our resources were here for him and his family, physically and emotionally. Mike and Pico wanted to show their heartfelt appreciation for everyone involved, including Physicians, Nurses, PCTs, physical therapists, cognitive and speech therapists, and numerous Caregivers at Sparrow Thoracic and Cardiovascular Institute (TCI), Mary Free Bed at Sparrow, the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, and more.
