RIP Mike Henderson - I'll tell a Hendo story that I always loved. Mike was in a band called the The Snakes. He was the first guy I ever saw wear a black straw cowboy hat. His blues guitar made you immediately aware of how cool he was, but the black straw hat sealed the damn deal. When he toured that black hat had it's own hard travel case. The case was black and stenciled on the side in white spray paint was "SNAKES" - on the way back from a gig in an airport the band came out to find the luggage carousal was off and all hell was breaking loose. The hat case was on the black carousal track and one of the snaps was open. The luggage crew was scared to death, they thought there was a snake in that case and they refused to go near it!! HA

I remember going to see Mike and the Bluebloods back in the 90's in Nashville at various clubs around town and every Monday night at the Bluebird Cafe. Monday was the only night when the audience didn't get "sushed" for talking. In fact, not only did the club not enforce the "no talking" rule on Mondays, Mike encouraged the audience to get as loud and raucous as possible. That's the Blues, folks!

This is a prime example of why my wife & I still go to juke joints! Having seen Mike play in a private setting I can report that his feeling for guitar is phenomenal.

I first met Mike when he was in the Hell Band. Heard him many times. Ran into him and talked many times, at his gigs, parties, Ernie's... A great guy, true gentleman, and a musician, singer, songwriter. Last time I talked to him was at Nowell's on West Worley. He was already a force in Nashville, but it was the same old Mike. Down to earth, regular guy, happy to see you and chat for a bit...

Dave! Yes! I met Mike my first night in Columbia. He was a sideman in the original Hell Band flatpicking and mandolin (?) with Lee Ruth I think. Later he hooked up with Forrest (RIP) and the brothers in the later iteration. Played with him on KOPN a couple times and we moved to Nashville about a year apart. Great guy. Ernies...haven't heard that in a while. I cooked there for a couple years back in the late 70s.@@dlparker

@@gregjwelsch I was in Springfield from June of '76 through July of '78, but I was a pretty regular patron of Ernies. Lived just down the street at 910 E. Walnut for a while. I' had to have been at Ernies while you were working, and we may have run in to each other on other occasions. I often feel the need to apologize to people who came into contact with me prior to Sep '81. Just apologize in general - can't remember for what but there was undoubetdly something. So just in case.. Hope you don't remember me, but if you do please accept my humble apologies.

Yeah, you probably were. I was there...even in at 3:30am on Tuesday to open for a while! I also worked for a good while at the Sub Shop right across the street. Used to go to the Cork and Dart after work. Played in a couple of bands, the Blewgrass Breakdown and the Thursday Night Club Band. Also was in Jerome Wheeler's "B-Movies from Outer Space", a crazy musical out at the Bluenote. The Thursday Night Club used to have regular parties and jam and such every Thursday on Bass Ave. And your apology is accepted.....but only if you will accept mine because there is a good chance something may have gone down as we were Dead heads and often chemically enhanced. LOL!@@dlparker

Someone in the comments couldn't remember the drummer's name - that's John Gardner - a Nashville legend. Played with the Dixie Chicks, James Taylor, Grand Ol Opry house band and many more. We used to watch this band playing at 3rd and Lindsley. John was in total control of the energy and at places he would bring this rockin band down to a whisper and play with his finger tips on the drums.

Man this was a great burnin' version! I saw Mike Henderson, Reese Wynans, Glenn Worf & a drummer I forget some time in the early 90s in NYC, after First Blood came out, they were amazing. Show ended way too soon for me. Never whistled so much, so loud, for so long, begging for more encores, in my life. Unforgettable.

I saw Mike at the Borderline in London around 1996. I asked if I could film him (I was right at the front of the stage) and he agreed. I was like a kid in a candy store and trying to get a professional approach to it. However, after the 2nd song I think he got self concious and politely told me to stop. Mark Knopfler later joined him onstage
