Nobody really talks about them like they do other bands. I remember being sad when they announced they were done making music. They were prominent in the music industry my entire life up to that point. I couldn't believe they'd hang it up like that. But hey.. can't argue if that's what they wanted to do. It's better than staying too long and making uninspired music.

1989-1990 was a supremely weird period for music. Most of the big 80s genres were in severe decline, nothing had yet ascended to take its place, and all kinds of stuff could be heard on Top 40 radio: euro dance, sometimes with Gregorian chants, adult contemporary, teen pop acts, New Jack Swing, indie rock--it's probably only in that environment that REM could have had a Top 10 in first place. That they remained a vibrant, creative force for almost two decades afterwards is pretty amazing.

The first time I heard this song I was driving home from work and I was almost home. The song was still playing as I turned off my engine and I sat there, on the street in front of my house just listening to one of the best songs I had heard in a long time. I don't think I've ever done that before or since. I LOVED this song!!

For me, Losing My Religion is the ultimate aeolian mode song, it keeps pulling you back down into the inescapable melancholy of those i-v-iv mandolin chords. Even the melody feels constrained. There is a glimmer of hope on “I thought that I heard you laughing” when it goes to the F and seems to break out of the pattern, but you quickly get sucked back down to that relentless Am - it’s the feeling of depression and hopelessness.
