The Austin Powers trilogy remains, for my taste, among the gems of comedy, up there with Airplane!, Top Secret!, The Naked Gun; and also Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles and High Anxiety. There are franchises that will always be enjoyable (Peter Sellers & Blake Edwards' Clouseau series comes to mind) and this is one of them. Silly, fun stuff. I suspect that anyone else could have easily thought up a bawdy spoof of 007 films with loads of 1960's fashion and music, but Mike Myers was the perfect comedian to see it to fruition. This had to be a dream come true for someone like him.

I think overall, the first movie is my favorite though I do enjoy aspects and scenes of the second and third movies. For instance, the opening to the third movie is great, and I think Michael Cain was a good casting choice, and lastly all 3 of the movies are filled with great quotes. The thing I liked about the first movie especially was that it’s watching a parody of an anachronistic stereotype trying to manage in a world that has moved on. I also liked the fact that in the first movie, even though Austin is a parody, there are still moments where he shows relatable qualities as a character, such as when he talks about his love for Vanessa’s mother . I’d like to see another installment but I’m not sure what path they’d take especially now that Mike Meyers is older. I think it’d be interesting to see a director like Edgar Wright take a hold of Austin Powers. Although I’m pretty sure the Austin Power movies are trying to ape the camera-work of the original James Bond movies, I find their direction kinda dull. I wish the direction of Austin Powers had a little bit more energy to it. It’s hard for me to articulate it exactly, but again, something like a variation of Edgar Wright’s directing style would help the action be even funnier. I know it may be a controversial opinion, but I also would want the fourth movie to have a stronger narrative. I know Austin Powers, as a series, is pretty much just a collection of gags and topical humor. But I’d like the last installment to be a little more than that. You can still have a comedy with a good story and exciting, but funny action scenes. This is something that I think Wright especially excels at in his comedies. It’d also be cool if, for the fourth installment, they emulated and parodied the string of phenomenal sequences that Daniel Kleinman made for Daniel Craig’s run as James Bond. It would need to be something that’s like a masterpiece; something that takes itself so seriously despite the fact that it includes Austin Powers and his motifs. They could pair it with a reworked version of “Soul Bossa Nova” for this opening sequence and give it just a little of that suave grandiosity that the music in Daniel Kleinman’s openings have; especially in movies like “Casino Royale” and “Skyfall”. Indeed, Quincy Jones already reworked part of the song during the opening of Goldmember and it sounded great. I’d want it to be an opening sequence that confuses the audience with its self-seriousness and artistry before the absurdity of Austin Powers begins. In a sense, the high quality of the opening would be a joke in itself. It’d probably be the last appearance of the iconic character, and in a sense a farewell, so you might as well go all out and make it a swan song that’s better than it deserves to be. I know my thoughts are controversial, but they’re just my personal thoughts that’ll never be realized anyway. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
