Just ripped my 1987 in the sandpit last week. It's sooo fast. I put a pwk 38 carb on her. It's stock bore. Starts right up cold and hot. Tons of compression. Fully rebuilt motor. Except I reused the crank and cylinder because they looked and felt fine.

You still have to change the break line and bleed it . A lot of people use a spare swingarm with a wheel already fitted so its really not that much faster still a couple hours work, its that starter that really saves the time, imagine how long it would of took to kick that thing.🤣

My buddy had a 84 490, yellow. I had to stay back aways when behind him across the potato fields on the way to the sand pit because that thing would absolutely throw a big roost. Big rocks would come flying at you with warp speed. Foundation murderer!

I had a 1987 modified .40 over was raced previous owner got 187 staples in a nasty wreck on it. He said this bike will kill you. It nearly did to everyone who was brave enough to ride it. Rode a modified KX 500 it was definitely faster bottom to top and everywhere in between.

What exactly do you mean when you said the head mod so it doesn’t ping? He said the head was O ringed when you agreed about the pinging
@jonmccormick8683
Жыл бұрын
From 1982 (first year YZ490) to just a few years ago these bikes would ping(pre-detonate) once they got hot and would lose power. There is a head mod for this that corrects the situation. For large 6'+ riders these bikes are an all around blast to ride and embarrass your water cooled 2T.and 4T friends. -Maybe the best trail bike one can buy.

It is change to the head squish angle that reduces compression slightly, that also helps combat pre ignition. Quick and easy to do, and is definitely one of the first must-do mods.
@MatthewJohnson-o4x

@@dr.hugog.hackenbush9443 How is it done exactly and what does it help or how does it change the performance of the motor. I have no doubt that you know exactly what you are talking about but I’m just not familiar with it and I thought the more compression the more bang as far as power

Had a cherry 88 YZ490 when I was 15, all my buddies wanted to throw a leg over it. I said "if you can start it, you can ride it." I only had one buddy that actually got it fired, should have seen the shit eating grin on his face after he saddled that animal. I sure miss that bike, was stupid to sell it.
