I just met Bonecrusher. He doesn't look close to 6'4, maybe he's lost an inch or three with age.But even at almost 60 years old, he's a BIG, BIG human being. His hands were huge and his feet looked like skateboards. His shoulders were wide. He looked like an NFL linebacker. He looked healthy and seem to have all his faculties. He is doing greatthings for kids in the community. Thatnks for a blast from the past!

Tyson did well against opponents who didn't fear him. Tony Tubbs, Jose Ribalta -- I'll think of some others when they come to mind. Also, only with your hindsight of seeing a past-prime Tyson fight Douglas, Holyfield, Lewis, etc. does that the idea of him doing poorly against people who didn't fear him come into mind.
@whutbrush

When Tyson was young, hungry, focused, and backed by Rooney in his corner, he had a method for every opponent. He had a great slip for the long jab of fighters like Smith here, Ali, Lewis, etc. He dictated the pace and could win by decision simply because he created more action. His explosiveness was obviously frightening. We never got to see him at his best. He canned Rooney and went with King before he even fully matured, that's the scary part. At his best, he would have beaten anyone, ever.

A watched this fight and was afraid "Bonecrusher" would be killed by Tyson. If I recall correctly, Smith was guaranteed 1 million for this fight. I was impressed that Smith had a college degree in business and thought he was hoping to survive this fight with Tyson so he could retire with some financial security. My impression during the fight was that Smith did exactly what I expected. He dodged and weaved throughout the fight and seemed to have trained in a way to guarantee his survival and not to gain a victory. Surviving a fight with Tyson was a victory in itself. At no time did Smith rush or push Tyson, probably the mistake all Tyson's opponents made that allowed Tyson to knock all of them out. Viewers of this fight were as frustrated as Tyson must have been as Tyson was unable to connect with any of his powerful blows. Of all the fights I watched (mostly well-promoted championship fights with Mohammed Ali,) I remember this fight with Tyson versus Bonecrusher Smith best. This was the only time I feared for the survival of Tyson's opponent. My anxiety lasted for the entire 12 rounds until the fight ended and Smith was able to walk away, still intact. Smith's strategy kept him alive. His surprising final flurry at the end of the 12th when he tagged Tyson with several powerful punches was his way of showing viewers that although he looked like a dud throughout this fight, he was a worthy champion against any opponent, as long as it wasn't Mike Tyson!

Tyson was asked at different times what it takes to be Champion, stay Champion and and win and so on... And he mentioned "Discipline" and Skill-set. Tyson's reign lasted 3 years and had 9 title defenses including unifying the titles which was a first in a long time. Tyson also routinely fought taller/heavier guys than him...except for Spinks who was only taller than him. Spinks is going down in history as a "LH Great"...but he was undefeated when Tyson fought him and he did win the title from an undefeated Larry Holmes (although Holmes was past his peak).

.It's also about the training and game-planning of Rooney with Tyson that was important that helped give Tyson confidence. Tyson became an inactive fighter while with King compared to when he was with Cayton (manager). The key was to keep him active. Tyson was blowing up in weight while off when with King which is also why he looked "flat" against Douglas; crash diet to lose the weight. While with Cayton/Rooney, Tyson stayed in shape and motivated because he always had a fight scheduled.

In the 10th round he decided to go toe to toe and got knocked out in about a minute. There's a reason he was called Bonecrusher. And your right he was afraid of Tyson that was obvious.f

Yeah, Frank Bruno easily outboxed Bonecrusher Smith for 9 rounds. Then in round 10 he also wanted to outpunch him and got knocked out quickly. With the benefit of hindsight we can see how typical this Tyson performance was, he never did well against anyone who wasn't afraid of him. He was always best with a scared opponent, Spinks being probably the most notable, like a rabbit in the headlamps, rooted to the spot and mugged accordingly. Also agree with showtime that Tyson was knocked down by a counter punch, he was off balance, hence a relatively soft punch did it, but he was still knocked down and it should have been counted as such.
@Moonraker1974

@fadethetrade Most fighters of Tysons build/style have short-lived "prime time." Jack Dempsey and Joe Fraizier were similar, the reason being, as fast explosive/pressure fighters, their physical conditioning has got to be 100% or they become ineffective. Whereas bigger, slower more tactical fighters i.e Lewis, Foreman, Smith can still remain effective without their bodies being quite as finely conditioned therefore they have a longer "prime time."
@edmeyer4800

@whutbrush : What's more, Tyson didn't have stamina issues as some pundits claim. At his best, he would throw combinations all 12 rounds. He also forced these taller men to basically give up by simply out-boxing them. Yes, out-boxing them. That's a small part of what got him frustrated: not their style, not their pace, not their punching. He would dominate them tactically, and they'd basically get so gun-shy that they would run away all fight long.

You could say that about a lot of fighters. Great fighters overcome obstacles. Look at Archie Moore's biography. That dude had a rough life, fought his way out of it to be a great fighter, and family man, only to get sick, and lose nearly 100lbs, and come back as good as ever a few years later. Archie Moore is a very underrated fighter. Mike Tyson is not the only fighter from the school of hard knocks. Forgive me, but I just get tired of the " ifs and buts" for Tyson, but no other fighter gets that luxury?

If I were to put another fighter in that position to finish off Tyson, I would put a young Foreman. Foreman had the size, strength, power in both hands, and understanding of how to finish off an opponent when hurt. Foreman would just have to make sure he doesn't get caught with something by throwing to wide. But even if Foreman goes down, I could see him getting back up and continuing on the pressure unless he is worn down by that time.

Let's take Marciano: Fought past prime Light-Heavyweights yet is considered an ATG at HW. He had 6 title defenses but out of those 6 fights, 3 {Walcott, Charles, and LaStarza} were rematches; one was against a fat former LH {Don Cockell}; and the last was against a 40+ year old LH named Archie Moore. Now there were positives to him like his work-ethic, coming in shape for every single fight, and retiring before he slipped which helped him go undefeated. Marciano reigned for 3 years.

I think many fighters who came up against a young Mike Tyson could have done better. Many lost before they stepped foot in the ring due to his formidable reputation. Take Bone Crusher Smith for example, in the last 10 seconds of his part 2 fight with Tyson, he realised he had nothing to lose and went for it, resulting in Tyson being rocked big time. Is you're up in Tyson's face and hit him with a decent amount of flurries, he will go down. Prerequisite being, you've got to be a big heavyweight

@@pyrotodd187 and what was Bonecrusher Smith?George Foreman was so slow he knocked out an extraordinary much younger opponent by name of Michael Moore becoming the oldest heavyweight champion of all times. George Foreman was 24 years older than a in his Prime Time Season Michael Moore, not to mention Old George gave Evander holyfield hell who is 20 years younger. I'm not saying that George Foreman would have beaten a young in his Prime Mike Tyson, but he would have given him much more problems if they had fought, much more than Bone Crusher.

Tyson showed some rare discipline in this fight. I'd have lost the will to live because Smith was so boring.
