When Tyson was young, hungry, focused, and backed by Rooney in his corner, he had a method for every opponent. He had a great slip for the long jab of fighters like Smith here, Ali, Lewis, etc. He dictated the pace and could win by decision simply because he created more action. His explosiveness was obviously frightening. We never got to see him at his best. He canned Rooney and went with King before he even fully matured, that's the scary part. At his best, he would have beaten anyone, ever.

Very smart fight from the Bonecrusher. Nothing wrong with his strategy - he simply couldn't execute. He put on a clinic on defense but could not muster any offense whatsoever until the last 10 seconds. But hey, at least he completely dominated the last 10 seconds.

Tyson was asked at different times what it takes to be Champion, stay Champion and and win and so on... And he mentioned "Discipline" and Skill-set. In similar words to him...if you don't have that "you're' fucked." When Tyson went on the decline that's when he relied on "fear" heavily. That's when he went into the "bully" role.
@KeeperOfProphecies

Tyson did well against opponents who didn't fear him. Tony Tubbs, Jose Ribalta -- I'll think of some others when they come to mind. Also, only with your hindsight of seeing a past-prime Tyson fight Douglas, Holyfield, Lewis, etc. does that the idea of him doing poorly against people who didn't fear him come into mind.
@Orangewind

Tyson's reign lasted 3 years and had 9 title defenses including unifying the titles which was a first in a long time. Tyson also routinely fought taller/heavier guys than him...except for Spinks who was only taller than him. Spinks is going down in history as a "LH Great"...but he was undefeated when Tyson fought him and he did win the title from an undefeated Larry Holmes (although Holmes was past his peak).

.It's also about the training and game-planning of Rooney with Tyson that was important that helped give Tyson confidence. Tyson became an inactive fighter while with King compared to when he was with Cayton (manager). The key was to keep him active. Tyson was blowing up in weight while off when with King which is also why he looked "flat" against Douglas; crash diet to lose the weight. While with Cayton/Rooney, Tyson stayed in shape and motivated because he always had a fight scheduled.

Many years ago when ABC used to show Saturday afternoon boxing I watched a match with Bonecrusher. For 9 rounds his opponent fought a near perfect fight, get in, mix it up.then step back and spar. In the 10th round he decided to go toe to toe and got knocked out in about a minute. There's a reason he was called Bonecrusher. And your right he was afraid of Tyson that was obvious.f

Yeah, Frank Bruno easily outboxed Bonecrusher Smith for 9 rounds. Then in round 10 he also wanted to outpunch him and got knocked out quickly. In fact, Jose Ribalta stated on his Facebook page that Bonecrusher was the hardest puncher he ever fought, hitting noticably harder than Bruno, Ruddock, Tyson, Witherspoon and Klitschko.

If I were to put another fighter in that position to finish off Tyson, I would put a young Foreman. Foreman had the size, strength, power in both hands, and understanding of how to finish off an opponent when hurt. Foreman would just have to make sure he doesn't get caught with something by throwing to wide. But even if Foreman goes down, I could see him getting back up and continuing on the pressure unless he is worn down by that time.

Let's take Marciano: Fought past prime Light-Heavyweights yet is considered an ATG at HW. He had 6 title defenses but out of those 6 fights, 3 {Walcott, Charles, and LaStarza} were rematches; one was against a fat former LH {Don Cockell}; and the last was against a 40+ year old LH named Archie Moore. Now there were positives to him like his work-ethic, coming in shape for every single fight, and retiring before he slipped which helped him go undefeated. Marciano reigned for 3 years.

@fadethetrade Most fighters of Tysons build/style have short-lived "prime time." Jack Dempsey and Joe Fraizier were similar, the reason being, as fast explosive/pressure fighters, their physical conditioning has got to be 100% or they become ineffective. Whereas bigger, slower more tactical fighters i.e Lewis, Foreman, Smith can still remain effective without their bodies being quite as finely conditioned therefore they have a longer "prime time."

I think it was to let the early damage take affect while afflicting more damage in the process. If a fighter could survive the early storm, Tyson would go into winning the round. I think it was intentional since his later rounds were pretty polished 86-88. Unfortunately, it's often interpreted as poor stamina, when his opponents could really take punishment at that level.

Dempsey: 6 title defenses although it may be 5 since I heard one may have been an exhibition: 7 year reign but 3 of those years he was inactive so he only reigned for 4 active years. @EngIishContingent The reason is because Tyson had started to slack in his training. He began to take for granted that he could beat anyone. I heard him talking in an interview after the Douglas fight saying that training had become very boring and monotonous for him, and that heart just wasn't into preparing for this fight. Had Tyson not gone to jail, I think the Holyfield vs. Tyson match up would have been one of the best fights of all time -- right up there with Ali/Frazier and Lewis/Marciano

I think many fighters who came up against a young Mike Tyson could have done better. Many lost before they stepped foot in the ring due to his formidable reputation. Take Bone Crusher Smith for example, in the last 10 seconds of his part 2 fight with Tyson, he realised he had nothing to lose and went for it, resulting in Tyson being rocked big time. Is you're up in Tyson's face and hit him with a decent amount of flurries, he will go down. Prerequisite being, you've got to be a big heavyweight

I feel that at that moment in time Tyson was faster, more powerful, more fearless, and more deadly than any who came after him. Lewis is a great i know, but had Tyson had more maturity, education, more time with trainer Rooney etc, i doubt he'd have been beaten at all. Lewis & Holy beat him when speed/hunger had gone.

If you can give evidence that Holyfield's success is all due to steroids and cheating in the ring, then knock yourself out. Holyfield always stood his ground when his opponents pressed, so he got his share of headbutts as well. Bottom line, he owned Tyson once and Tyson fouled out the second time to avoid another beating. As for Lewis, he fought two rounds with Tyson as teenagers. Tyson busted him up in the first and Lewis busted up Tyson in the second. They both went on to be great champions.

Lewis peak late but then found everybody running from him after he beat down the then scariest heavyweight in the world Razor Ruddock However highly these two are rated, they will rarely if ever stand among legend its self.
