These 2 very different ballets beautifully show Misha's virtuose versatility. I was surprised to read that Rose was (as he said in 1976) one of the most difficult ballets he danced. He makes it look so elegantly effortless. And Petroushka.. I've watched other performers but they always 'play a puppet'. As for Misha's Petroushka; you keep trying to find the strings he's attached to. He is so light and loose; he IS the puppet. Just perfect. Thank you for this video.

@@JohnRaymondHall It's indeed a wonderful book. His comments on Petroushka are very interesting too. It made me recognize how the fast steps and gestures indeed are directly on the beat of the music.

@@MMMa3 i learned so much from that book - about the history of ballets, the challenges of technique in each, preparing a role, interpretation and so on - i dip into it quite often

Undescribably beautiful... Margot was... I can't even find the words, graceful, lyrical, gorjeous are understatements... Same for Baryshnikov, that man... Simply the best male dancer ever, no less. Thank you Alex for this precious upload, you just made my rainy day a bit warmer

He really danced with ALL the great ballerinas of that age as he said he wanted to do, did he not? ;) They actually had great energy together.

yes, i guess everyone was more than happy to dance with the great Russian - of whom Danilova said he was the greatest dancer in decades. yes, they work well together - a good role for Margot at this late stage of her career. they have a beautiful mutual 'softness' in this ballet

Physically he has the Nijinsky body type so he looks like all the photos. Baryshnikov is good in both of these.

yes, he has that powerful muscularity of Nijinsky. he talks in his book 'Baryshnikov at Work' of the strain on the thighs of so many plies - and says Nijinksy mast have had a very strong Achilles tendons to support them.

hi Virginia. i was just wondering what kind of partnership they could have had, had Margot been twenty years younger. but then Misha moved around and it would not have had the life that the partnership with Rudi had. :)

isn't it! they both work together very well - i think it could have been a very interesting partnership had Fonteyn been younger and Baryshnikov not wanting to try so many different new things.

Sure...but truth is ,i respect tremendously Baryshnikov exactly because he was wanting to try so many different things. It's wonderful that he did not fall into the rut of repeating what first made him successful, but that he constantly searches for the new, for the exciting and for the less conventional. He is not just a dancer, but truly and artist, an original.
@JohnRaymondHall

i agree - he was fulfilling his ambition to try the many new things in the West that he could not try in the restricted rep. at the Mariinsky. yes a great dancer and artist - in his book 'Baryshnikov at Work' reveals this on so many levels, technically, in artistic choices, in the history behind the works he danced - and is full of great photos! :)

реакция Марго в Розе была не по возрасту. её вариант должен был быть более мечтательным и грустным,а не девичьи пламенным.
