The church of San Sepolcro, dating back to the 12th century and extensively remodeled in various periods, is divided into two levels, one of which is underground; it rises not far from piazza Duomo, on the area of what was the forum of Milan in Roman times. The church was founded as a private one in 1030 with the title of Santissima Trinità by Magister Monetæ Benedetto Ronzone or Rozone, Master of the Mint, and built on land belonging to the same family near his home, in the nodal area of the city, headquarters of the mint and commercial activities. By the will of its founder, the church was in the shape of a cross and after the first Crusade it was remodeled until it took on the forms coinciding with the Anastasis of Jerusalem, which remained over the centuries, as evidenced by the testimonies of the fifteenth century. The church of San Sepolcro was elected in 1578 by Carlo Borromeo as the main seat of the congregation of the Oblates of Saints Ambrogio and Carlo which he himself founded; Borromeo himself instituted the ceremony of the Holy Nail which, annually, winds its way from the Cathedral to San Sepolcro. The church was then further modified and restored between 1713 and 1719 and again at the end of the 19th century when the façade was completely rebuilt, changing it from the Baroque aspect it still had to a Romanesque style which was considered more in line with the original medieval church. In 1928 the parish of San Sepolcro was suppressed and the church belonged to the Biblioteca Ambrosiana. The interior has remained to this day in the Baroque style. The atrium is attributed to Francesco Maria Richino and enclosed by two chapels decorated with frescoes by Carlo Bellosio San Carlo al Sepolcro and San Filippo Neri presented to San Carlo. Beyond the small side doors which - by steep stairs - lead to the crypt, there is the church with a single nave, embellished with Corinthian columns, flanked by two other small naves. In the right apse we find a terracotta sculptural group depicting a Flagellation, Caiaphas tearing his clothes, Saint Peter who denies, while in the opposite one the Washing of the feet with the apostles seated around a semicircular table in front of which Christ is rinsing Peter's feet.
The underground crypt of the lower church, which can be accessed from the left of the main nave, is covered with marble slabs from the Augustan era which bear witness to the ancient flooring of the Roman Forum. There is a sixteenth-century polychrome terracotta statue depicting the saint kneeling in front of a sarcophagus, perhaps the work of masters from Campione in the first part of the fourteenth century, which must have contained some relics of the Holy Land brought there by the Lombard crusaders (land of Jerusalem and some hair of Mary Madeleine). On the other hand, there were many alterations over the centuries, starting with the addition of the two bell towers during the 12th century.
