Milan Kundera was born in Brno (Czech Republic) in 1929. He published his first novels in his mother tongue, including "The Joke" (1967), "The Book of Ridiculous Love" (1970) and "Life is elsewhere" (1973), which ironically attack the model of communist society.
After the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, he lost his work and his works were banned. In 1975, he managed to emigrate to France and wrote, "The Book of Laughter and Forgetting" (1981)-a memoir that led to the revocation of his Czech citizenship-and two novels, "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" (1984) and "Immortality" (1991).
Already in French, the novels "The Slowness", "The Identity", "The Ignorance" and "The Feast of Insignificance"; the play in three acts "Jacques and I love her. Homage to Denis Diderot"; and four essays: "The art of the novel", "The testaments betrayed", "The curtain" and "An encounter".
