I think that's why, even to this day, I probably play some very distasteful, cheesy and corny things during my solos. But I'm pretty good when I play behind people. Miles Davis didn't fire me, and neither has Carlos in all these years. It was also cool to see my old Tune Bass - same one that I recorded "Smooth" with 10 years later! (Hmmm, I should pull it out again...)

Benny that’s an awesome solo! Love the Beguine the Beguine lick. Miles always quoted lines in his solos. I love the “Automatic” Pointer Sisters he does on so many solos. Even Bananarama “Robert DeNiro. “ I saw you all in Festival Hall LONDON. RIP Miles & Ricky. . You are a legendary bassist.

@@Ed-Topo-108 Aw thanks, you're too kind! Not sure about the "legendary" part, though, haha. I just played with real legends!

Benny! It's a great solo! I can't hear one corny note and you also build it up very elegantly with pauses and returning to the theme and fitting quotes. The king choose you and you played with him for quite some time. On the other hand you're probably right about the "general" audience not being able to separate instruments when listening. I think good bass-solos like this changes that in the long run! All the best, Freddan

this is "the senate/me 'n u" rather than 'Code M.D.'. A tune that always featured a bass showcase - this is just the last portion of the song, I think.

Excellent observation. What he plays doesn't disagree enough with everything else and so has little effect. A bassline can do amazing things to the whole. He plays it like a lead guitar, not really adjusting the nuts and bolts of the groove.

Oh my god, 2:05-2:05 IS corny! Why, oh why did I choose those notes? I don't know how I'll ever live those 5 seconds down. 2:25, eh, not so bad. :) Okay, all kidding aside, I actually think bass solos, while lots of fun for the bass player, are a bit goofy, and somewhat of an acquired taste for listeners. Sometimes we're reduced to doing them because many people wouldn't even know we're there otherwise! :)

Your judgments are based on one solo, during one gig, out of how many? If he got hired, he was doing something Miles liked, I think that's good enough for most people.

But the phrasing is also cheesy and corny at times. Very un-Miles. At times it jumps into being very cool. Especially at 1.42-1.59. But jumps back into corniness from 2.00-2.05 and 2.15-2.20. Agree?

This late comeback period of Miles was not his best. He was having some recurring health issues, Cicily Tyson was a problem. I think he had some players that were a little corny too. This bass guy is good, but he ain't his own man...and Kenny Garrett playing too loud with that Leisure suit on, and he has hair too! OMG...he looks silly!!!!
