today we will look at the companies then list the brands that fall under them. the major milk companies in kenya include: brookside dairy limited, new kenya cooperative creameries limited KCC, daima africa, meru central dairy cooperative union limited, kinangop dairy and githunguri dairy farmers cooperative society.
we start off with brookside dairy limited. this group has close to 40% of the kenyan milk market share. In terms of ownership, the kenyatta family owns 50% while DANONE owns 40% the remaining 10% falls under the abraaj group. what are the brookside dairy brands? well, here they are: ilara, tuzo, molo milk and delamere. we cannot forget to mention the direct hand of brookside to farmers as it buys raw form of milk from over 200,000 farmers country wide. what's your favourite milk brand from brookside?
next, we look at KCC. this group has well over 120 dairy product they offer. as per the owners, it is more of a parastatal with the government owning a bit over 50%. The government took control during the kibaki era after cases of mismanagement. since then, the different government regimes have pumped in money to keep the group strong. this company’s brands include: hold crown, KCC fresh milk, KCC mala and safari land powder milk.
let's now look at githunguri dairy farmers cooperative society limited. this is a very close competitor of KCC in terms of the market share they serve. they process and produce over 240,000 litres of milk on a daily basis. impressive, right? as the name suggest, this is a society hence it is owned by its members who currently are at over 26,000. the main flagship product of GDFCS is fresher milk.
next up, we look at daima africa. it falls under a parent company sameer agriculture. as it stretches it wing even outside kenya, it has over 50 million product consumers. the current CEO is known as vijay singh. its products include daima fresh milk and daima yoghurt.
let’s shift to kinangop dairy. It is involved in processing, packaging and distributing dairy product. majority of its share are owned by muki investment group and has major offices in ndunyu njeru, ol-kalou road, north kinangop. its most popular products include; kinangop fresh milk and kinangop yoghurt.
last on our list, we look meru central dairy cooperative union limited. formed way back in 1985, the factory can process over 500,000 litres of raw milk daily. it is largely owned and controlled by farmers. kenneth gitonga is the current CEO of mount kenya milk which falls under MCDCU. their major products include: mount kenya whole milk and mount kenya long life milk.
to address the cartel issue, this comes mostly due to the brookside factory. It has over the years been known to take up popular milk products as their own. this includes molo milk, delamere and tuzo. this also comes due to the fact that the kenyatta family owns literally 50% of the whole group which is just nothing short of incredible.
