On the night when I came home from school before the match there where lads(Newcastle and Sunderland fans )waiting next to the railway tracks at Hedworth and Fellgate estates with stones and bricks to throw at the trains carrying the Chelsea fans from central station in Newcastle. Got the train from brockley whines station if I remember correctly we had a small carriage at the back with the rear of the train Chelsea had the rest of the train. Remember being in the cage in the fulwell end and being crushed up against the barriers. I was 12 years old and at times it was scary and started to get a bit panicked. A big fella pushed some space around me and my pal and we managed to get under the barrier to a bit of space at the back of the next section. After that it was a brilliant night. The noise of the singing two nil two nil and Wembley Wembley stays with me to this day Remember the Hostility in the air as Chelsea had a reputation and to be fair there seemed to be a great away support for them. I saw there was some fighting in the seats and the rumours went around at the end they had been trying to break down the gates at the roker end. One of my favourite football games I ever went to!

Good post. I remember being at the other fixture at Stamford Bridge 36 years ago today which is why I am here today. I was at the final also. Happy days, where did the time go.

It was a noisy, frantic midweek game at Roker under the floodlights. Thankfully, we kept Pat Nevin quiet and Shaun Elliott, our best player, had another great game. Shame he was suspended for the final, the Norwich goal would never have happened with him at the back. Colin West was sold not long after this game. Despite the high of reaching Wembley, our season ended in double disappointment.

@@jamiewilson5679 - I know, first and only time that has happened to both League or FA Cup finalists I think. I made some friends in green and yellow that day and it was awful that both clubs couldn't stay up.

Anyone who went to this game will remember it kicking off everywhere outside before the game. The police sirens were going off 20 mins after the kick off and hundreds of Chelsea boys didn’t get in until the 2nd half. I guess they were having more fun outside.

Watch the open end fill up as the game went on. Chelsea had the seats opposite camera from the open end to halfway line.

I wish we had lost this semi final. The day out at Wembley was a total disaster caused by Len hopeless Ashurst. Dropping Colin West for the final was a scandal.

Why couldn't McLaughlin just walk off?!, why be stretchered off with an arm injury?
