There is actually a live version titled as the official music video for this one. It is however performed with Blaze, their next singer. I think he does a fantastic job singing this song. Please, check that out too!

For me, the best of maiden really is gone, but there will still be good tracks, On this album, like:, "The Fugitive", "Judas be My Guide" and "Fear of The dark" (Masterpiece)... After this album, well, we'll talk more later...

I relistened to the whole album yesterday. Although stylistically it's in the same vein as No Prayer For The Dying, it's miles ahead in quality (at least in my opnion).

I think 'No prayer' was a transition album after guitarist Adrian Smith's exit in 1989. The material was likely filler songs or rushed material... whereas 'Fear of the dark' was a focused, fresh album.

I think Steve Harris came up w/ some incredible lyrics - it was about 1991 Gulf war soldiers returning w/ PTSD (It wasn't something that people talked about back then, especially after the Vietnam war) ... There was also something called 'Gulf war syndrome' that US soldiers were afflicted w/ after being exposed to radiation & toxic chemicals during the war. Many veterans died from cancer - the Pentagon tried to cover it up... I read stories about US soldiers returning from the 2003 Gulf war and a lot of them said PTSD was so bad that they couldn't be around anybody anymore, because they 'jump the gun' whenever someone approaches them. They are always afraid that they will react violently and end up shooting someone harmless... they are always a suicide risk. One veteran told me he nearly took a swing at me when I tapped his shoulder from behind to get his attention at work. It was just unfair that so many soldiers survived war abroad, only to be treated like disposable pawns by a corrupt system that wouldn't help them cope w/ post-war life... Alice In Chains wrote the song 'Rooster' about their guitarist Jerry Cantrell's father, who was Vietnam vet - it perfectly captured the struggle of just 1 vet at a time when PTSD was not even comprehended.

Probably already mentioned in another comment, but the official video of this tune is pretty damn good -- a mix of concert footage featuring Blaze and Gulf War I footage. The live version of the song you're asking about is for Fear of the Dark. A number of professionally shot options to choose from, all good. My favorite is the one from Argentina (Flight 666), or Rock in Rio 2001 is excellent as well. Don't bother with the studio version. The live version is better in every way.

Great track hey. Starts off slow as it sets the scene with the soldier laying awake at night, describing the thoughts running through their head. When the guitars kick in, it's like true visions of war take over.

This song is easily one of the best in this album and probably one of my favorite Maiden songs. It has such a great atmospheric catchy riff, it tells a great message and it has the emotion that I enjoy (sounds kinda cringe I know). The song I'm definitely waiting for is Judas Be My Guide though, best riff in the album in my opinion with a epic chorus. 🤘

This a pretty good song and one of the better one’s on this album. It has a catchy riff, just a bit too repetitive of a chorus. It’s a pretty self-evident the message it has. A political song based on war and how governments are using soldiers as pawns when they don't really want to kill anyone. Written around the time of the first Gulf War, it has been announced live by Bruce Dickinson on more than one occasion, once at Live at Donnington Monsters of Rock. As most learned people know the Gulf war was about protecting America’s interest of oil in the Middle East.

The artwork is one of Iron Maiden's better ones... it was by artist Melvyn Grant (who would continue doing Eddie's artwork for later albums). Prior to that, Maiden's albums were drawn by Eddie' creator, artist Derek Riggs, who was paid my Maiden's organization for over a decade. But after 1990, Riggs claimed he got weary of drawing Eddie (especially after 'No prayer' and the documentary video 'Ten years' by Maiden) and parted ways w/ Maiden's management (I think he did the artwork for the 2000 album 'Brave new world', but that was it). Artist Mark Wilkinson (who painted Judas Priest's artwork for 'Painkiller'... 'Jugulator'... 'Firepower' albums) did a gruesome depiction of Eddie on the 2015 album 'The book of souls'

The album art for this album was the first time Maiden used a different artist (they had used Derek Riggs up until this point. wiki quote - "It was the group's first not to be designed by artist Derek Riggs, whose contributions were rejected in favour of Melvyn Grant's. According to Iron Maiden's manager, Rod Smallwood, the band began accepting contributions from other artists as "We wanted to upgrade Eddie for the 90s. We wanted to take him from the sort of comic-book horror creature and turn him into something a bit more straightforward so that he became even more threatening." Following Fear of the Dark, Grant has produced several more covers for Iron Maiden, making him the band's second most-frequent artist after Riggs."

I not a fan of this one. Its a drag tempo wise. There is dead space in the mix. Song feels empty. Lacking something. Fast but routine solos. I don’t mind the guitar harmonization after the first solo section but too little too late and nothing special after. This song is a sign of things to come on the next two albums!

Ok I’m in the minority here, but this song is boring. Other than a good tempo change at the solo, it really is very much modern Maiden in its plodding along. Overly redundant and well not exciting.
